Vengeance In The Tempest
As Martin Luther King, Jr. says, ``Man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love``. Throughout the Shakespeare play, The Tempest, the protagonist is the rightful Duke of Milan who has been living in exile on an island for the past twelve years. He is also a powerful magician, the father of Miranda, master of Ariel and Caliban, and a guy who really likes his books. In William Shakespeare play, The Tempest, Vengeance is displayed with Antonio, Prospero, and Caliban; Revenge in The Tempest can lead to self-destruction.

Antonio shows his vengeance in Act 2 scene 1 of the play. Alonso persuades Sebastian to kill his brother so he can be the heir of the throne. Antonio says, ``Yes I did, and look how good I look in my role, much better than before. My brother`s servant used to be my equals. Now they work for me`` (II, I, 238-240). He states the reasoning for this scheme is because Claribel, who is Queen of Tunis, is too far from Naples to inherit the kingdom so her father should die. That would give Sebastian the throne. This was vengeance to take over Prospero`s dukedom. He also expresses vengeance in Act 1 scene 2 of the play. When Prospero and Miranda are deserted on an island, he tells her about her family secrets regarding Alonso taking away his throne. Prospero

says, ``My deep trust in him made me deeply untrustworthy, arousing him in a treachery as big as my trust was, my trust which had no limit, an infinite confidence. With Antonio possessing such powers and wealth coming not only from my income but also from his ability to take whatever my authority allowed him to take, Antonio started to believe that he was the duke, like some liar who begins to believe in his own life`` (I, II, 93-101).
