The "Tell-Tale Heart" is an American classic. The teller of Poe’s tale is a classic unreliable narrator. The narrator is not deliberately trying to mislead his audience; he is delusional, and the reader can easily find the many places in the story where the narrator’s telling reveals his mistaken perceptions. His presentation is also deeply ironic: the insistence on his sanity put his madness on display. The first paragraph alone should provide fertile ground for readers to find evidence of his severe disturbance. The effect of this story is powerful and successful.…

This tells you how he adds suspense because after this happened, they were just staying still for a while waiting for another sound to be made. Another use of suspense in the story is, “He was…

In the paragraph it moves at a slow pace but goes into great detail about how he moved through the mans room and what he did in there. When he moves “very, very slowly [inside the room]”(poe pg 1) it builds suspense because that paragraph moves at the pace that he does. Since the paragraph moves at a slow speed it builds suspense because you don't know what could happen next. Since he repeats words it also builds suspense because when he moves in side the room he repeats cautiously and he goes into great detail about what he did cautiously.…

One of Poe’s major contributions to this short story was his conception of the plot not simply as a series of events, from one thing after another but associated with all those details in the story that relate to and revolve around a central theme. “The Tell-Tale Heart” is very well a murder mystery in which the narrator concocts a plot to kill the old man. However, the real plot of the story is Poe’s elaborate pattern of psychological obsession and displacement, as one man tries to accomplish what all human beings wish to do to defeat the ticking of the clock that marks one’s inevitable movement toward…
