Writing, speaking, and listening are three ways people use to express their feelings, emotions, beliefs, and opinions. All three work together to make the process possible. In order to listen, somebody needs to speak or write, and in order to be heard somebody needs to listen. Listening can help you learn as well as show respect to the speaker. When a person speaks or writes what they truly believe the listener can learn while listening with no judgment. It is important to express your beliefs if you ever want them to be listened too and taught. Every person has his or her own opinions. Sometimes people don’t want to speak about topics that cause controversy

In “Tell me more” by Brenda Ueland, she explains how important listening can be to a person in their life. When you listen to somebody you show the person respect and interest in what they have to say. Brenda Ueland believes, “When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand.” When someone knows they are going to be listened to or when someone is going to read what they have written the speaker is more likely to let loose and share their true feelings. Ueland says, “…When someone has listened to you, you go home rested and lighthearted.” Being listened to can help you feel better about yourself because it can make you feel important. When you listen to somebody you learn more about the person and become closer to them. Listening can help you understand a person. When a speaker or writer has something to say that can be important or controversial it is important for them to be heard, even if the listeners are just simply themselves. Brenda Ueland believes, “Listen to…those who love you and those who don’t, to those who bore you, to your enemies. It will work a small miracle. And perhaps a great one.” In order to learn you must listen and in order to be learned from you must …show more content…
Gloria Anzaldua in “Borderlands” explains it well when she says, “Writing produces anxiety. Looking inside myself and my experience, looking at my conflicts, engenders anxiety in me.” Anzaldua looks at writing as something that can be risky and something she can be judged for. Writing, to her, is also a way to show who she really is and share her feelings that aren’t always accepted. People write to let out their emotions. You can share your sadness, anger, aggression, happiness, love, fear, and hurt through writing. Writing can make a person feel better. Gloria Anzaldua explains, “That’s what writing is for me, an endless cycle of making it worse, making it better, but always making meaning out of the experience, whatever it may be.” When a person writes, a voice is established. The listeners can be other people or at often times, themselves. A good piece of writing comes from the heart. It comes from past experiences and memories. A good piece of writing is easy to realize because it is something you can relate to or understand. When you can put yourself in the writer’s shoes it makes it a good piece of writing. Anzaldua says, “I cannot separate my writing from any part of my life. It is all one.” Gloria Anzaldua is a Chicano, Hispanic, a female and she is a lesbian. She struggles with her identity and believes she is looked down on in life. She writes about her life and oppression she

The essay “Why I am a writer” from Pat Mora explains why the author loves to write. She enjoys reading books and through her writing she would like others to discover the same joy she feels when she reads a book. She loves writing because she can find out more things about herself and also describe them. Most importantly she is a Hispanic writer and wants to share her ideas and stories because she believes it is important for Hispanics to take part in literature. A good listener will attend their speech and be sensitive to the accuracy of the message and the possible interpretations that could be derived from it, as well as, encourage a speaker to speak from his or her heart and expound on his or her ideas without censure. Although multi-tasking is a valuable skill, it hinders our ability to live mindfully because while we are busy making sure that everything gets done, we forget to live in the present. When you learn to listen mindfully, your perception is heightened and you experience multilevel…

Speaking and listening go together like best and friend. The reason this is the analogy that I chose is because best friends listen when their best friend is speaking. Although, speaking does not require listening, and listening does not require speaking. Many times when I am talking to someone in my family they tune me out, ignore me. It is in times such as this when speaking does not demand listening. Speaking does not always need listening because often times the words being said are little more than idle chatter. For and example, Melinda says on page 86, "By the time we eat dinner, the Battle is roaring at full pitch. Grades, blah blah blah, Attitude, blah blah blah, Help around the house, blah blah blah, Not a kid anymore, blah blah blah." Also,…
