I arrived at around 8:00 o’clock in the morning and immediately logged-in and reported to Mr. Jerwyn R. Tan the SRO (Student Resident Officer) and asked on what would be my task on that day. I was assigned in the Public Area as a Houseman and started preparing the materials needed like the mop, soft broom and stick broom together with the dustpan. He requested me to clean the terrace, tea room and function room with the help of my co-practicumer Ms. Marie Vee Peñaflor, Ms. Marjoree Guy, Ms. Dorris Colminar and Mr. Mark Ian Quintero to wipe the windows, sweep and mop the floor. Then we took our break and eat our lunch. After eating lunch, I logged-in at around 1:00 pm and immediately reported to the SRO and requested me to clean the front office lobby, water the plants and pick the dried leaves as well. After my duty, I logged-out at around 5:00pm and went home. It was an exciting day to start my first duty at LNU house.

They were being stretched thin with an influx of patients. Some kind of road accident. She would not be dealing with any of those patients though, instead a man who had come in for the first time with an unidentified illness. He had passed out in the ambulance and was just arriving. She could not even catch his name, but pulled on her surgical gloves and hurried to where she was directed, one of the rooms nearby. She was ushered in quickly and told that a nurse would probably be with her in around fifteen minutes, to call right away if anything became too urgent, and a file was pressed into her hand. The door snapped closed with a click and she fumbled to open the file, walking towards…

We started our day in the hospital lobby promptly at 0630, the professor started off by explaining where on the unit each of us would be, as she usually does. I was placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) along with one other student. This week was different than previously, there were more infants and nurses and also Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) was in a different room. Because NICU was full with nurses and infants. I started off in IMCU, where I met this wonderful nurse who I connected with and stayed the whole day talking to her, when I wasn’t checking on the other student. The nurse allowed me to shadow her with the three infants she was assigned to. At each station the…

I was on my third day of residential care placement; the staff had just started to take turns for their morning tea break so I took the time to catch up on my case study patient’s medical history in the nurses’ station. Within a few minutes the Manager of the rest home ran in to gather the blood pressure machine and bandages. She informed another student nurse and myself to “take these to Max’s (pseudonym) room NOW, while I call an ambulance”.…

Rotation Day 8 today I’m in processing it was a slower day than yesterday so the processer had me help with a few things. They also asked me if I could go with a phlebotomist to drop some blood to the Operation room. When we got there I noticed read lines on the floor meaning we could not pass until we had full gowns. We waited to see if there was someone we could flag since there was no one in the front office. A person came in and we told her we had a delivery she took it and we left. When we got back they had a request to draw a patient in the SSI department I didn’t know where this was so the phlebotomist asked if I wanted to go check it out so I went. I didn’t know it we had to drive since it was in another location. We went in and the patient was in the recovery room she was alert at the moment and recognized the phlebotomist right away.…

I started my shift at 7:15 am. My work clothes are comfortable and unrestrictive; my footwear is flat, sensible and offers protection to my feet and ankles. When I arrive to the service user’s home, I knock on the door and wait to be let in either by one of the service user’s or by a work colleague. Once inside I greet the service user, if they are awake. I then head to the sleep in room, to start verbal handover with my work colleague. After the 15 minute handover, I then check and sign the handover sheet. Check the on call rota, should there be an incident or or accident. Also check the communication book and also check any money and medication, then checking the activity planner. Once the service user wakes, we say hello to each other, and chat for a short period. I encourage them to start their personal care. After, I ask them if they need any support with getting dressed and preparing breakast. The time is now 8:00 so I administrer the morning medication. I always wash my hands before handling food or medication and after assisting with any personal care. After the service user has had their breakfast. I support them with the washing up. I will then encourage the service user to clean their property. I will then support the indiviual in safely cleaning, all ares with correct products. After this I consult with the service user, about their activity plan for the day, if the service user decided to go into town. I ask them how they would prefer to travel, by bus or by personal car.…

We have done everything from studying too late night food runs. Due to my close proximity to the RA staff, I am aware of what the job entails. I do not see this position in a gilded form because I am aware that it is many late nights and a lot of paperwork. I am prepared to accept that at any quiet moment in my room could be disrupted by a resident seeking help. In some ways, I am looking forward to it, for the fact that I would have the capability to help those individuals.…
