Teeth Decay
Rationale
It is important to determine which ingredient in beverages causes tooth stains and even decay. Enamel is a very important part of teeth as its main purpose is to protect the tooth, and since it is a mineral it can not grow back. Enamel has a very complex structure that has slowed down innovation. For example, even though scientist knows magnesium, carbonate and fluoride ions influence enamel properties, they hadn’t been able to map their location in enamel at a high enough resolution. Scientists hope that by understanding more about the mechanism of how teeth decay will lead to innovations in its prevention and treatment. The impact of this research will allow us to better educate our society as 37% of kids in the United States, between the age of 11 and 13, suffer from enamel erosion.

Hypothesis
If egg shells are soaked in tea, coffee, soda and fruit juice , then coke should cause more stain damage because it has the most sugar.

Boil 8 large white eggs.

Take 4, 16 oz plastic cups.

Use the measuring cup to fill each one 16oz cup with tea.

Repeat step 4 for coffee, coke and grape juice.

Place two large white eggs into each cup for 10 minutes to simulate the contact that each beverage will have on teeth during human consumption.

After the 10mins are over, take the eggs out of each cup and compare changes in color by using the numeric tooth whitening guide.

Take a picture of the eggs.

Record the color change on the data chart.

Repeat steps 6 to 9 twice a day, keeping the eggs in a clean empty 16 oz cup when not being used.

After 4 weeks of recording the color change on the data chart, use each of the 3 whitening ingredients to test which ingredient will remove the different liquid stains the best;

Pour 1 tablespoon of baking soda in a 16oz plastic cup and mix with 2 tablespoons of water.

Pour 8oz of apple cider vinegar in a 16oz plastic

    What Is Tooth Decay?

    • 3 Pages

    Tooth decay occurs when three factors are present: bacteria, sugar, and a weak tooth surface. The sugar often comes from sweet foods such as sugar or honey. But it can also come from starchy foods such as bread and rice. When a starch breaks down in the mouth, it forms sugar. Bacteria that live on the surface of a tooth eat sugar. When they do so they change the sugar into an acid called lactic acid. Healthy tooth enamel may be able to resist this acid. But tooth enamel often has tiny holes and weak spots. Lactic acid can soak into these holes and dissolve the minerals of which enamel is made. Over time, the hole may get larger and larger. If the hole penetrates…
