Teenage Behavior In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet is a rather deep tragedy written by Shakespeare regarding a 16 year old boy who is heartbroken by his first crush making him feel like life isn’t worth living anymore. In order to try and help Romeo feel better about this girl he can’t have, his friends help him sneak into the big party the Capulets are throwing in an attempt to see Rosaline again. Instead Romeo ends up meeting the underage virgin Juliet and from then on they are madly in love… or are they? The anatomy of the teenage brain and teenage behavior says otherwise.     After reading Romeo and Juliet and “Teens and Decision Making” there are some connections that can be drawn between the two texts. In “Teens and Decision making” the author states, “When teens make choices in emotionally charged situations, those choices are often more weighted in feelings (the mature limbic system) over logic (the not-yet-mature prefrontal cortex)”.     To confirm this, “Teenage brains rely on the limbic brain to make decisions. However, the limbic brain makes choices based on emotions. Teenagers struggle to make logical, well thought out plans due to an ineffective prefrontal cortex. The teenage brain seeks pleasure seeking activities.” (Source 2: Teen Brain: Still Under Construction) The two teens are barely reaching adolescence, and because of this, their rational part of the brain is not developed and their decision making is hindered.
