My essay begins with teenage suicide. Suicide attempt or gesture usually refers to an act focused on causing one's own death that is unsuccessful in causing death. Thus, in simple terms, suicide refers to having intentionally caused one's own death. So what causes teenagers to attempt suicide? The teenage years are a stressful developmental period filled with major changes — body changes, changes in thoughts, and changes in feelings. Strong feelings of stress, confusion, fear, and uncertainty, as well as pressure to succeed, and the ability to think about things in new ways, influence a teenager's problem-solving and decision making abilities. For some teenagers, normal developmental changes, when compounded by other events or changes in their families, such as divorce or moving to a new community, changes in friendships, difficulties in school, or other losses, can be very upsetting and can become overwhelming. Problems may appear too difficult or embarrassing to overcome. For some, suicide may seem like a solution. My second point of call is teenage pregnancy. This is a situation which involves female adolescents. A teenage female can be pregnant as early as age twelve or thirteen, although it is usually fourteen and older. The fact that teenagers become pregnant is related to many factors. These are related to the specific situation of the teenager, and the group that she interacts with. The rates of teenage pregnancy vary from country to country and are related to differences of sexual activities, the general sex educations being provided and contraceptives being available. Teen pregnancy will sometimes involve low birth weight. Social matters also play a role: Often, the teenager grew up in poverty. She also often has a lower level of general education.
