Why is this a problem, especially for teen drivers?| I believe that all car crashes are horrible, dangerous for everyone involved, and most likely always preventable. There's a couple reasons why i think its such a problem, especially with teenage drivers because.... Crashes are the number one cause of deaths among teenagers. More teenagers die in traffic crashes, then homicide, suicide, drugs and alcohol combined. Although teenagers represent 7% of the licensed population, they are involved in almost 20% of all fatal motor vehicle crashes.I could go on and on with facts, but overall lack of driving experience, visual search habits, distractions, speed and space management, and a poor driving attitude is why car crashes are such a problem with teenage drivers. |
Statistics from research regarding teen crash rates. | ⦁ Crashes are the #1 cause of deaths among teenagers.⦁ Teenagers represent 10% of the U.S. population, but account for 14% of deaths in the U.S.⦁ More teenagers die in traffic crashes, then homicide, suicide, drugs and alcohol combined.⦁ Teenagers represent 7% of the licensed population, they are involved in almost 20% of all fatal crashes.⦁ Adding teenage passengers can increase your fatal crash risk rate.⦁ Approximately 5,000 teenagers die each year in car crashes.⦁ According to the AAA foundation for traffic safety over half of motor vehicles crash deaths among teenagers occur on weekends. ( Fri - Sun )⦁ Teenagers are twice as likely to crash at night time. ( p.m.. - 6 am. )⦁ Over One - Third of teenage crash deaths occur between p.m.. - 12 am.⦁ Nearly 2 out of every 3 people killed in teenage driver crashes are the people other than they teenage driver.⦁ Overall lack of driving experience is why teens crash, and they especially have difficulty with visual search habits,

    In 2007, the latest year for which data are available, motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of death among 13-19 year-old males and females in the United States. A total of 3,466 teenagers ages 13-19 died in motor vehicle crashes in 2009. This is 60 percent fewer than in 1975 and 15 percent fewer than in 2008. Thirty-three percent of deaths among 13-19-year-olds occurred in motor vehicle crashes, 39 percent among females and 31 percent among males. 16-year-olds have higher crash rates than drivers of any other age. The crash rate per mile driven is twice as high for 16-year-olds as it is for 18- and 19-year-olds. About 2 out of every 3 teenagers killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2009 were males. Sixty percent of teenage passenger deaths in 2009 occurred in vehicles driven by another teenager. Among deaths of passengers of all ages, 18 percent occurred when a teenager was driving. Statistics show that 16- and 17-year-old driver death rates increase with each additional passenger. Eighty-three percent of teenage motor vehicle crash deaths in 2009 were passenger vehicle occupants. The others were pedestrians (7 percent), motorcyclists (4 percent), bicyclists (2 percent), riders of all-terrain vehicles (2 percent), and people in other kinds of vehicles (2 percent). Fifty-five percent of motor vehicle crash deaths among teenagers in 2009 occurred on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. In states with GDL programs that include at least five of the most important elements, there was a 20% reduction in fatal crashes involving 16-year-old drivers.     Over the years there have been many car accidents, many resulting in death. Teenage traffic accidents are the number one cause of death among 16-20 year olds. In 1996, 6,300 teens died in the United States from motor vehicle crash injuries. The fatality rate for teenage drivers is about 4 times as high as the rate for drivers 25 to 65 years old. On average, a teen driver is killed every other day in California. In most of those fatalities, the reason was either involving speeding or driver error.
