Ted Lavender Character Analysis
Lieutenant Jimmy Cross is reminded of his love for a girl named Martha by the multiple memories he has of her. He carries pictures of Martha as well as the letters she has written him. Jimmy remembers their first and only date to the movies and is heartbroken that the love he feels for Martha will never be mutual. The narrator then starts to explain the things the men carry. Most are things that would be needed for survival during a war, like compasses, raincoats, mosquito spray, and tents. Others are things the men have an emotional connection to like, a girlfriends panty hose and a bible. But all men carry burdens, memories, and one another. One day while the men are on a mission a soldier named lavender is shot. The men almost make a joke of his death and some are shocked at how lightly they are taking this tragic event. At the end of the chapter Jimmy has a realization that he needs to stop living in the past and decided to forget about Martha and take on the responsibility of a leader.

The most shocking part of this chapter was the way the men handled the death of Ted Lavender, specifically Cross’s reaction. The soldiers all took his death way too lightly. Ted was killed right in front of them and killed at a time they were least expecting something like this to happen. The way the soldiers handled this was almost inhumane. Then as

It showed me how people may have a manipulated thought about how tragic war is because of the inability we have as humans to believe such tragedy is possible. It made me wonder if people who were in the war don’t only tell stories from their experience not because it’s painful for them but because they worry about people not believing them. O’Brien made a very good point in saying that in some way for people that lived through a tragic situation they can only tell what seemed to happen, and how in some way telling these stories is

Ted Lavender was a man who got shot in the war, killing him. The emotional burden that Jimmy Cross held over it shows what relations you gain when youre in there. The author says “On the morning after Ted Lavender died, First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross crouched at the bottom of his foxhole and burned Martha’s Letters.” (O’Brien 7). Whenever Ted Lavender was shot, Jimmy took it out on himself. But not only did he take it out on himself, he took it out on his love for Martha. He could feel as if he put all his focus on loving and day dreaming about them being together, and not as if he was there for his men when they needed him. Jimmy Cross has many emotional burdens with his time he spent in the war. Another part in the story says “He carried a strobe light and the responsibility for the lives of his men.” (O’Brien 4) This meaning, Jimmy was always carrying around a “strobe light”, but symbolizing that he feels the need to be watching them and taking care after them at all times; coming with the emotional and physical burdens he gets with them.…

The story starts off by putting the reader into Jimmy Cross’ mind. Cross is the leader of the group that the book follows around Vietnam, he is only 24 or 25 years old and at towards the end of the book says he is not suited for the job at all. Cross occupies his mind all day with his beloved Martha, a woman from back home who has absolutely no romantic interest in Cross at all. He reads her letters, stares at her picture, keeps a pebble she sent in his mouth, and fantasizes about tying her to his bed and touching her knee all night. As though his confession of being an unfit leader was not enough he also gives away his inner most thoughts to the reader revealing just how incompetent he is. One day while fantasizing about Martha one of the men, Lavender, is shot in the head, Cross blames himself for the Lavender’s death and never lets it go. He burned Martha’s pictures and letters, and even threw away the pebble she sent him to help him focus on the safety of his men. Even 20 years later when Cross visits O’Brien, a fellow soldier and main storyteller of our novel, Cross is still full of guilt over Lavender’s death and obsessed with the uninterested Martha. “At one point, I remember, we paused over a snapshot of Ted Lavender, and after a while Jimmy rubbed his eyes and said he 'd never forgiven himself for Lavender 's death. It was something that…

In the first chapter of The Things They Carried, “The Thing They Carried”, Tim O’Brien uses the motif of intangible weights the men carry and how they have the strength to alter one's performance and emotional state at war. The intangible weight of Martha's love is like a barbell Jimmy Cross can never seem to let go of. Continuously carrying extra weight, Cross expresses how he "love[d] Martha more than his men" (6), which results in the death of one of his men soldiers Ted Lavender. Cross’s love for Martha distracts him from his responsibility as a lieutenant to have the backs of and “love” (6) his men. The intangible weight of Martha's love that he can't return distracts Cross from his duty as a lieutenant. Being distracted from his responsibilities…

"He was a kid at war, in love. He was twenty-four years old. He couldn't help it" (1255). When O'Brien mentions Jimmy Cross in the story, he also often involves Martha, "First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried letters from Martha" (1249). On top of the carrying letters from Martha he also carried pictures of her in his wallet. And O'Brien shows how important that relationship means to Jimmy when he states, "Lieutenant Cross kept to himself. He pictured Martha's smooth face, thinking he loved her more than anything, more than his men" (1252). Jimmy was so in love with Martha that he barely took his responsibilities as a commander of the company. "On occasion he would yell at his men to spread out the column, to keep their eyes open, but then he would slip away into daydreams, just pretending, walking barefoot along the Jersey Shore with Martha, carrying nothing" (1254). O'Brien directly points out that Jimmy Cross could not concentrate on war and was not able to handle the circumstances. "After five minutes, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross moved to the tunnel, leaned down, and examined the darkness. Trouble, he thought - a cave-in maybe. And suddenly, without willing it, he was thinking about Martha" (1254). The platoon was on a mission and his men was in danger and just moments before one of his men died, he was daydreaming about the girl back home "...and now Ted Lavender was dead because he loved her so much and could not stop thinking about her" (1251). Jimmy Cross carried more than physical things with him, he carried such love and obsession for Martha that he was losing his soldiers but he was going to try and fix things. "On the morning after Ted Lavender died, First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross crouched at the bottom of his foxhole and burned Martha's letters. The be burned the two photographs" (1258). The guilt he feels for Ted's death could turn him into the soldier, he should have been all…

He never once describes the men in the war as brave or courageous, he actually talks a lot about their fears and the emotional baggage they carry. The reader soon finds that Jimmy has a girl back home named Martha. He loves her with all his heart but these feelings seem to be unrequited as Martha treats him as a good friend rather than a potential boyfriend or lover. He describes a night when he had taken Martha to a movie and kissing her goodbye that night after taking her home. “Right then, he thought, he should've have done something brave…...He should’ve risked it” (5). This shows how Cross feels that taking risks, even as small as kissing a date goodnight or touching her, are more brave than any mission carried out by the soldiers. Thoughts of their relationship always occupy Cross’s mind and distract him from his duties. His lack of attention costs one man his life, having lasting effects on Cross’s conscience and gives him an eternal sense of guilt over his actions. This showed how emotionally fragile Vietnam soldiers were and the amount of stress and tragedy being put on them on a day to day basis. Another example of this is when Cross’s fellow soldier, Kiowa, dies in an accidental explosion. Cross is found squatting in the muck of a lake, almost in a daze, contemplating the death of all those around him and what it means and who is to blame. He tried to tell himself that “No apologies were necessary, because in fact it was one of those freak things, and the war was full of freaks, and nothing could ever change it anyway. Which was the truth, the exact truth. Lieutenant Cross went deeper into the muck, the dark water at his throat, and tried to [convince] himself it was the truth” (176). This symbolizes the breaking point of Cross and how he really is no longer courageous. He takes tragedies to heart and feels…

He starts explaining more in detail Lt. Cross'obsession with Martha. Ather this, the narrator begins posting things that are more military than the first list. This list incorporates weapons of different sorts and the amount they weigh. It is an extremely non-emotional list generally and it appears to cut down the enthusiastic level of the narrator. This appears to trigger the narrator's feelings again and he clarifies in more detail what occurred after Lavender was shot.**** ----. The list discusses how a few warriors feel about the death of their friend. This incorporates Lt. Cross' contemplations that Lavender is dead since he couldn't quit considering Martha. This is the most emotional and definite account of the story. The narrator focuses back on the list as though to center himself but now even the list appear to be more emotional. The weapons are currently depicted as "methods for executing or remaining alive." This list of things is brief and the narrator goes all the more rapidly into a dialog of Lt. Cross' fixation on Martha, the good fortunes rock she gave him, and the dreams he has about her continue distracting his mind from the war in Vietnam. 'He carries a love for her despite her lack of return love. He carried it forefront in his mind to the point of total distraction.' (21) In this quote we analyze the desire…

The story of “The Things They Carried” took place during the Vietnam War. The author, Tim O’Brien describes each character by the things they carried. All of them carried necessary things which could help them go through the war – some were common, some were different, and depending on the soldier. Lieutenant Cross carried photographs of Martha, the girl with whom he fell in love. Due to an unclear relationship and a great distance, the more Lieutenant Cross thinks about Martha, the more he suffers from his unrequited love. As a teenager I was greedy, and gambling was a short and easy way to get money. I expected to make a lot of money but it turned out that I lost all of my saving, and I suffered from my greed. From “The Things They Carried,”, just like Lieutenant Cross coped with adversity by repressing his addiction of love for Martha, I learned my lesson by repressing my greed, I quit a gambling and being back on track.…

Each soldier in the story “humps” an object of escape in the form of imagination, fantasy, or mind altering substances. The protagonist, Lt. Jimmy Cross, means of escape is love. This is brought through in vivid detail about his obsession, a girl from back home named Martha. He reads her letters, stares at her pictures, and will even “sometimes taste the envelope flaps,” (392) all the while understanding her affections are not returned. This is referenced symbolically with the mention of her volleyball picture “in her white gym shorts and yellow t-shirt,” (402). By which yellow represents the color of friendship.…
