Technology in Classrooms
Tablets. Smartphones. Smartboards. The biggest issue society will have to face in the near future is effectively incorporating technology into public schools. There is a mass of new equipment being thrown haphazardly into classrooms. But do teachers know how best to use it, or are they left drowning, trying to determine how to avoid the increased number of student distractions that inevitably accompany it? This is the newest challenge. How much is too much? Technology has the potential to revolutionize the classroom if used correctly, but it could also be severely detrimental to the education of our students.
Initially, the most difficult part is discovering all of the possible uses for the new equipment. A tablet, for instance, is usually used for playing games, checking email, and using social media. For some subjects, it is easier to relate these uses productively to the curriculum than it is for others. A common example is English versus math. In an English class, a tablet can be used for projects, researching information, working collaboratively with other students via email, social media, or both. In a math class, this same tablet appears to be more of a hindrance than a help. Typing math symbols is more effort than it’s worth, games always seem more interesting than learning the lesson, and there aren’t usually research projects about algebra. Despite these obvious barriers however, tablets can actually become a useful tool in all classrooms. There are many apps that can aide in learning, and more are being created every day. “Factor Factory”, “Picturing Fractions”, and “Khan Academy” can all be helpful in a math classroom, especially on a review day. Khan Academy is especially useful for students, as it has coherent lessons for several different subjects, and many levels within each. There are apps for teachers as well, including some for monitoring students’ progress and aides for planning lessons. All in all, having tablets in the

    For schools and universities, both have experienced many changes with the technology that is available. Instead of students having to go to the library to complete their work, most can now just walk into their classroom filled with new desktops and laptops. With the increase of technology in most schools, it is almost becoming a necessity for classrooms to have up to date technology for students. Students that have been able to work with laptops ever since elementary school get so used to the technology available that most find it just standard in classrooms today. In the classroom it does not stop with the computers, now teachers are having smart boards made and put into classrooms. But do these smart boards really help the students learn better? I highly doubt that a smart board in the classroom is going to help a student want to pay attention to another boring lecture of some moment of time in our history. Frankly, that smart board is all but making the teacher’s job easier. Or is it? What if that teacher or professor is a little older than some of us? Someone who is not used to having the high amounts of technology in today’s classrooms may not know how to work that smart board. All that does is waste time. The same can go for students who grew up in low income areas who are not used to working with computers. While others in the classroom are busy typing a paper, this student is probably sitting in the back wondering how to change his font.     One cold morning a young man by the name of Cyrus was awoken abruptly by his alarm clock. He had spent all the previous night playing games and browsing the internet. He took a shower, ate, threw on his clothes, a Carhartt and went out the door. He went inside the school feeling miserable because he knew he had seven hours left before he could do anything remotely fun again. The extremely disappointing thing is that Cyrus wasn’t the only one. Everyone else walking in the bland metal doors felt the same way. Cyrus ran into some friends, greeted them coldly, and continued to his classroom in room 217. He sat in his seat and set down his twenty pound backpack and pulled out his textbook, notebook, and pen. From there he repeated this six more times. After the long day was over Cyrus had to lug the twenty pounds back home. After he had gotten home Cyrus changed into his work uniform and went to his job at Burger Town. At ten o’clock he came home and did homework till eleven at night. At this point Cyrus was exhausted and just wants to go to bed. A single day may physically drain this young man, but thirteen years of this will emotionally exhaust him.…

    Teachers must have a plan to limit off-task use of handheld devices while increasing student interest in using the devices as educational tools. In order to do this, teachers will need to explain and enforce consequences when the rules for using handheld devices are broken. Juli Di Chiro, a superintendent in Oregon, commented on misuses of technology in a recent article for the Ashland Daily Tidings. Di Chiro noted that “technology isn’t the root of the problem.” She then said, “It’s like any other misbehavior and we have to make sure if that does happen, that it’s a learning opportunity for our kids, so they understand that if they do those things that it’s not appropriate and we’ll need to redirect them” (Guzik 2). Di Chiro realizes that students regularly misbehave; they aren’t misbehaving simply because they have technology at their disposal. The real problem is the students’ attitude toward learning. When students do misbehave, restricting them from using technology for a short while will be advantageous as it will take away something that can enjoyably be used to learn. When students see that if used properly the handheld devices allow them an entertaining mode of learning, they should be less likely to misuse the devices in the future.…
