Technology and Internet in the Classroom
Technology and Internet in the classroom have long been debated topics among schools and educators. While it’s true that the world is becoming more digital, some people have reservations about whether Internet use should be allowed in the classroom.
Many believe that using the Internet in classrooms encourages a more creative and engaging classroom environment. Instead of just listening to a teacher lecture students can use the Internet to access information and explore the material more in depth. This can help students to learn the information better and develop critical thinking skills over straight memorization. 43% of students agree their school needs more technology (Source).
However, many teachers and even students find that when students are being allowed to bring their laptops to class and use the Internet, it goes from being a tool to a distraction. Most students, when allowed to, use the Internet for surfing the web which takes away from the what they should be learning and distracts those around them also. It also sets a bad standard for people who use their laptops to take notes. On the other hand, 47% of students agree technology makes professors better at their jobs.
Most schools do not have a school wide policy about using the Internet in the classroom and rather allow teachers to make their own policies. However, one school that is taking an active stance against Internet usage is the University of Chicago Law School that banned Internet access in their classrooms saying that it hindered the teaching and learning process.
On the other hand, most people who use the Internet in their classes don’t actually mean to distract themselves and their peers. It’s just out of habit and something that most students can’t resist. Because we live in a technology driven world we are constantly connected to the Internet and our generation is all about multitasking we find it almost impossible to battle the urge to surf the Internet, even during class.

With no internet students will recognize how much more focused they will be.…

Like any situation, there are pros and cons to both sides of the argument. According to Barshay (2014), “We had the money to buy them, but maybe not the best implementation. It became unsustainable” (p 1). Barshay is referring to a school in New Jersey that was able to acquire technology; however, they did not know how to properly use it in the classrooms. Not knowing how to integrate modern technology into a classroom setting is not a good enough reason to say giving students laptops is a bad idea. According to Hertz (2007), “The first step in successful tech integration is recognizing the change that may need to happen inside of yourself and in your approach to teaching” (p 1). Hertz argues that it is in fact possible to integrate technology into the classroom if the teachers are open to learning new ways to teach while incorporating technology. Another concern is addressed by Winnie Hu in an article about laptops in the classroom. Hu (2007) says, “The students at Liverpool High have used their school-issued laptops to exchange answers on tests, download pornography and hack into local businesses” (p 1). This article addresses some concerns that parents and teachers have about how much access their children are receiving. While it is possible to get distracted in class and find it tempting to share answers or look at inappropriate things such as pornography, it is…

I’ve realized technology is very helpful now days but in the classrooms it’s more distracting than anything else. As Michael J. Bugeja stated in “Facing the Facebook”, Academics assessing learning outcomes often discover that technology is as much a distraction in the classroom as a tool. I catch myself checking my phone in class every now and then but when I do I miss out on what the instructor is teaching. Technology is a great tool for us to learn and gather information but when you put technology in the classroom it becomes more distracting than helpful.…

Is technology a distraction to students or are we, the students, bringing upon ourselves to get distracted through technology, specifically laptops? Why do people want to demand updated technology in the first place? It is simply because technology is dynamic in which provide numerous information to us to enhance our knowledge and help us accomplish various tasks. As technology is improving, using technology is irresistible to students’ later lives due to our society and technology combing together. The innovative technology is merely a neutral tool that we, students, can choose to use anyway we wish.…

Some people may argue that when using technology students will break the rules and not do what the devices are meant to be doing. Students are responsible enough to be trusted to do the work they are assigned, with the assistance of an electronic device. The schools that do believe in using technology to assist students, put rules in place to discipline students doing the wrong thing. If a child decides to break the rules then they will miss out on an education, so if they get a bad mark it will be their own fault for using their resources incorrectly. Students marks reflect on the way they used the technology, so they're effectively deciding what grade they receive by the way they use their device.…

The internet is a great and expansive place, and that is why sometimes students rather explore it then listen to their teachers. All these sites and apps are taking up the attention of students throughout the world. This is shown in a Canadian study which proves that computers are helping lower the users grade and his or hers classmates as well. The experiment showed that students who were using computers during the lecture had lower grades than those who were using pen and paper. The worst part is that students around the computer user were also affected and they too had lower grades. A professor at NYU said that “screens generate distraction in a manner akin to second-hand smoke.” He teaches Media Studies and was an advocate for the use of technology during class. The tipping point for him was when he realized that the distractions spread. He no longer allows the use of technological devices unless the assignment requires it. He also stated that when technology was removed from the…

Providing Internet in schools can be beneficial to students because it can provide students with greater learning capabilities. Before the Internet one would have to scour through many books just to find one small piece of information. With the internet this problem is resolved. One can easily search for the topic and get relevant statistics and extra, more updated, information that one cannot find in a book. The internet can provide this and expands learning outside of the classroom. Through the use of this amazing development we can all be more effective in our work. An example that may illustrate this is a student who needs to write a research paper for school and without the internet he would be all day in a library looking through irrelevant books, but with the internet this all changes. He may now find his information effectively and find other online resources that may assist him in his efforts. The Internet not only provides more information about what was covered in class but extra information and skills that may be applied outside of school. It can answer questions that others may not know completely. The Internet is a critical part of learning in our…

As the whole world of the “information Super Highway” is in constant transition, so is the rule of internet on education, still being formatted, evaluated in constant transition (Carmella Kedem, CAPP 385, Spring 1999). Questions of honesty and integrity immediately come to mind. Would the student simply plug into one of those services and for answers to school work problems (Paulita Laurita, BellaOnline’s Library Sciences Editor)? Then it involves significant concepts that students must know in order to understand and notice the impacts of internet in their Academic performances.…
