Teamwork In A Japanese Internment Camp
Have you ever thought what it would’ve taken to survive in a Japanese internment camp? It would take incredible work and strength. The utmost important factor would be teamwork. Trying to solve a problem as a group is the best way to respond to conflict. First, has your teacher told you that teamwork makes the dream work? It truly does; there is more power in a group than in an individual. Imagine you are a Japanese-American in the 1940’s. Your home has just been seized and you are moving to an internment camp. The conditions are unbearable. For example,“The buildings had no window screens but plenty of bugs, there was a record-breaking temperature of more than 120 degrees, and windstorms coated everything with fine sand”(Oppenheim 6). This is very important because if you react too quickly, your response might be out of anger when there might not be and conflict in the first place. For example,“When you go into a conflict situation already feeling extremely threatened, it’s tough to deal with the problem at hand in a healthy way. Instead, you are more likely to shut down or blow up in anger”(Segal). When the Nazis took over Europe, especially Germany, people felt very angry, but in an important moment such as this, it is important to remain cool, calm, and collected when dealing with this huge hurdle. Anne Frank said,“Thanks to Father -who brought my entire postcard and movie-star collection here beforehand -and to a brush and a pot of glue, I was able to plaster the wall with pictures. It looks much more cheerful”(19). Anne Frank kept a cheerful attitude when in the worst of times. Third, after you perceive conflict, how should you respond to it? When you respond to conflict, you should always respond in a lighter tone at first, but if that doesn’t work you need a new tactic. You need to address the problem, and create backup plans. For example,“Determine follow-up you will take to monitor actions. You may want to schedule a follow-up meeting in about two weeks to determine how the parties are doing”(Resolving Conflict Situations).     When Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942,1 thousands of Japanese-American families were relocated to internment camps in an attempt to suppress supposed espionage and sabotage attempts on the part of the Japanese government. Not only was this relocation based on false premises and shaky evidence, but it also violated the rights of Japanese-Americans through processes of institutional racism that were imposed following the events of Pearl Harbor. Targeting mostly Issei and Nisei citizens, first and second generation Japanese-Americans respectively,2 the policy of internment disrupted the lives of families, resulting in a loss of personal property, emotional distress, and a personal attack on an entire race of people based solely on their ancestry. In this essay I will attempt to explore the experiences of Japanese-Americans during the internment period and the ways in which these experiences negatively affected their lives. Using the book Prisoners Without Trial and primary sources from relocation camps and assembly centers, I will analyze the physical, emotional, and social effects of the unconstitutional imprisonment, and how these effects shaped and reflected the lives and actions of those within the camps. Japanese-American internment violated basic human rights through racial discrimination, and in the process, subjected citizens to poor living and food conditions, emotional hardship, and financial loss, resulting in a lower standard of living and social imbalance affecting the entire race for the duration of WWII and years to come.…
