The Benefits of Teaching Diversity
The United States is an increasingly diverse country. As minorities, including certain religious and ethnic groups, make up a greater percentage of the population, it is important that students in public schools be educated regarding the importance of diversity and multiculturalism. As far back as 2004, only 60% of public school students were white, with black and Hispanic students making a 17% of the population each (Education Groups). In ten years time, these percentages have undoubtedly increased. This is just one reason why teaching diversity and multiculturalism in public schools is important.

improves community life in a variety of ways. One way is that it helps different cultures to not only exist side­by­side, but to exist in peace. Teaching students about diversity at a young age helps students to develop the characteristics that make this unity in a community a lasting feature. Developing attributes such as tolerance and respect in young children helps them to contribute positively to a multicultural environment. It teaches them to develop a better appreciation for diversity in their everyday lives.
Teaching diversity and multiculturalism in public schools also helps students incorporate the viewpoints of others within their own belief systems (Strauss). Viewpoints range from religious beliefs to political affiliations. Teaching students to appreciate the viewpoints of others also results in them appreciating their own viewpoints. This is important in a diverse political landscape. Diversity education undoubtedly provides greater context for students to reflect on their own beliefs and to compare them with other belief systems. This is important in that it helps students to change their own beliefs and mold them accordingly, resulting in new belief systems.
Another reason diversity education in public schools is that it drastically improves the learning environment in which students and educators coexist. Firstly, it creates a more stable environment that is centered around respect. Such an environment helps decrease the incidences of bullying of any kind in schools.
