Teaching
For my future that I have ahead of me I have many goals I would like to reach, but one of my biggest goals is to become a teacher in the elementary schools. My motivation to become a teacher is that I love to be with and around children. They never fail to put a smile on my face. My book that I chose had told me all about being a teacher and some of the most important things that you have to remember when being a teacher. I wish to become a teacher in the lake school district because lake is one of the top schools in the state and I would like to be one of the reasons that they are and teach the children some of the things that they are going to need to know to succeed in their long lives. I read between two different books for my reading this summer and the book that I found to provide me with more information was called "Ferguson's Careers In Focus". This book told me about the history of elementary schools and how far back they can be tracked which is all the way back to 100 B.C., when the people of Judah established schoold for young children as part of their religous practices. Back in the day in Western Elementary's to be a teacher you only had to complete elementary school themselves. Many elementary schools combined all eight grades into one room and taught the same material to all of the children at the same time. The second thing this book told me about was the jobs that teachers have to do. Majority of the elementary school teachers have to teach a course of subjects such as language, science, reading, mathematics and social studies. In the classroom the teachers provide different methods of learning to their students such as reading to them, group projects and showing movies to discuss afterwards. Also before tests a lot of teachers like to play review games as most teachers call them because it helps the students process the material through their brains a lot quicker. Teachers of the first and second grades cover the basic skills: reading, writing, counting and telling time. Although teachers are required to follow a curriculum designed by the state or local administration they often learn new methods of teaching for their classrooms. Last but not least the "starting ouy" process of becoming a teacher. You will obtain a college degree after finishing the student teaching program and becoming certified, teachers have many avenues for finding a job. Many public schoold will post in the newspaper about job openings but while you're looking for a steady job you can work as a substitue teacher, but in more urban areas with many schools you may be able to find full time substitue jobs. While reading the book i realized how much I would love to be a teacher and work with young children everyday because of the smile that they can bring to my face in an instant. i would love to watch the progress the students make throughout the year and feel proud that I would be able to teach them new things each and everyday.

    Goal Statement

My main reason for wanting to become a teacher is because I love children and I love working with them. Upon graduation from Boston College, I've had the opportunity of working in New York City public schools as a substitute teacher and at a privately owned nursery school in the Bronx as a part-time instructor. My experiences have been very rewarding thus far and have inspired me to want to continue along this path and seek further knowledge in the field. I can't even begin to describe the joyous feeling of knowing that I've touched the lives of the kids-- it is truly priceless. When kids pass tests, when kids say, "I get it," when kids come in and say, "Thanks. You're the best teacher I ever had," or "will we have you again" that means a lot. They make me laugh, they give me hugs, they cheer for my presence, they are observant, and most of them just need a little push. They give me nicknames, they miss me when I'm gone, they try so hard to do what I ask so much of the time. The most amazing feeling of all though is when the kids tell me they want to be just like me and teach just like me and are able to go in front of the class and teach others what I have just taught them. I have finally discovered what I am truly passionate about and am pursuing this passion by continuing my education so that I am able to fulfill my goal of being the best that anyone possible could be. This is what has driven me to want to go to Mercy and continue my education to become a teacher.…
