32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

In the freshman year of fall 1994, Ms. Gruwell, who is later also known by her students as Ms. G, introduced herself through her first journal entry. Throughout her entry she wrote about the description of the school and its surroundings. Wilson High School is located in a safe area, but like Ms. Gruwell, you would have noticed that students from all walks of life attended the school. As a fairly new teacher, Ms. Gruwell expresses her nervousness through her entry by formulating questions that she thinks will arise when the students see her. “Will they think I’m out of touch or too preppy?…

Russ Posten, neighbor and close family friend, entered the breakfast room of my house for the interview, happy and positive, true to his nature. Sitting down, eager to begin, he gave me a brief over-view of his life. He lived in California until fifth of sixth grade, when he moved to Spokane, Washington. He started off at Jefferson Elementary, “was poured into Sacajawea Middle School, and dumped into Lewis and Clark.” In elementary and middle school he reported being socially awkward, but for Posten, high school was a time of social prosper. While these four years were a lot of fun, they were also very trying and life-defining.…

Mrs. Johnson has always been known as one of the hardest teachers at Bayou Academy, but on my first day of seventh grade, I was able to experience just how good she lives up to her reputation. It was a very nerve-racking day for me, being in high school for the first time scared me. But, there was something else about this day that scared me even more and that was going to Mrs. Johnson's class. As I walked into her classroom for the first time, I realized I wasn't the only one scared. The students already sitting in their desks all had pale faces and looked as if they had seen a ghost. We were all scared of failure. The first day…

Sylvia Barret, a new teacher is starting her first day in room 304. She finds out that teaching isn’t all that she thought it would be. Her first friend is Bea a veteran teacher who helps Sylvia out by explaining how Calvin Coolidge high works. The writer takes all the craziness of a normal high school and embellishes them; for instance the school guidance counselor is always using big words and thinks all the students need help. And Mr. Mchabe the administrative assistant who is nosy about everything. The Janitor who is never available. The students are also exaggerated, “the slut” who needs to be next to two boys boys at once in class. The student government organization president, he always is looking for a vote.…

How would a psychoanalyst and a behaviorist differ in their views of how this problem developed and what should be done about it. Mrs. Nelson chose to read her students a story that, judging from the reactions of the students, catches their attention quite well. She also makes sure to stand in front of her students and read the story to them. After the story Ms. Nelson has the students look up word definitions from the story, write a sentence and draw a picture. This creates an engaging activity because the students are comparing definitions to the book and drawing what they find the definition to mean. It gets the students active and actively thinking.…

Mahatma Ghandi once made the statement, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” If one wants to bring about a positive change, they must be aware of the problems and take action. Similarly this is what Baldwin tried to get teachers to understand in his Talk to Teachers. In order to teach effectively and to be able to affect students, teachers must first begin with themselves. Baldwin employs to teachers to change the way they see black children and to improve their education.…

The word prep was originally used for rich students who went to expensive private schools that were well known to students from public schools. These students weren’t always snobs, and they normally did much more sophisticated things then an average middle class student. For example, instead of playing football, they played a game of polo, and shopped in…

This week at Essex Elementary school I taught a review lesson to my students. I believe the lesson went well because the students were engaged, participating, and became confident on past topics taught the previous weeks. I started off the lesson with solving Jasmine’s mystery, which I believe was really beneficial. The past couple of weeks focused on Jasmine and her mystery so I believe it was important to solve the mystery in order to close that lesson. I required students to write a bulleted list of evidence and then a short summary of who and how Jasmine can accuse. The students then shared their summaries. I believe this went well because the students were very enthusiastic about solving the mystery.…

Prep school or preparation schools. Is a school for young kids, down to the age of 7-8 years. It is a school where you send your kids, so they get smarter or learn to be independent. There are typical some strict rules about seeing their parents. It is often 3 weeks or longer. It is a private owned school where the students also live, but I some cases there are also day students. Private schools are in many occasions, for the rich. Because of the low teaching level in state schools, parents send their kids away to get a higher education level. It also gives the children an opportunity to get in at a better middle school and so on. It gives a chance to get a scholarship for example, for oxford.…
