Teacher Interview Paper

Teacher Interview I interviewed David Dunn, Physical Education Elementary teacher at College Grove Elementary on March 8, 2017. Mr. Dunn works with grades k-5 and earned his master degree in marketing then later returned to school to attain a degree in Physical Education with no minors. Currently, Mr. Dunn has taught for 3 years, all of which were at College Grove Elementary. Over the 3 years Mr. Dunn has worked as a P.E. instructor the school has grown tremendously. Originally, he was the only P.E. coach the school had, but now the school has had to bring in an additional coach to help out on Wednesdays and Fridays when the P.E. classes are doubled up. Mr. Dunn informed me that his tasks as a Physical Education instructor are not
Dunn what his favorite part of his job is and he smiled and told me he just really enjoys watching the children grow. He said that it’s very interesting to see how much his students grow each year, how much they learn from class to class, and he takes pleasure in hearing about the things going on in each child’s life. Each child has a different story to tell and he enjoys being able to not only be a teacher, but also a friend and mentor to his students. Another thing he told me he enjoys is watching the children have fun while they are learning. The relationship between Mr. Dunn and his students was intriguing to watch. The children all wanted his attention and would run up to him and say “watch this” or “look at what I can do”. He patently watched and then gave high fives and reassured them of what a good job they did. It was apparent that he cared about them and they cared about him and what he thought of their new learned skills. Some words he used to describe his students were funny, caring, and outgoing. Dunn said he thinks every Physical Education teacher should posses are the ability and desire to really know their student, an energetic personality and to make sure the students are having fun. Knowing the students is by far the number one thing Mr. Dunn kept coming back to. He said it’s important to know your students so you can figure out if something is going on with a particular student that may require more attention. He told me by knowing his students he is also able to figure out who will work well together and who will most likely cause problems. Another issue he talked about was being able to discern whether a student is being truthful or not. As for the characteristics of being energetic and fun, he said it really pulls the kids into the lesson and gets them excited about participating.
