Task 1
(1.1)

Using the internet, research the following types of early years childcare setting. Write a brief summary of what each one offers that is unique, and consider what sort of families or carers might find each one particularly useful. Continue on a separate sheet if necessary.

Nursery schools

Childcare from 3 months – 5 years. There are separate areas for each age of child (i.e. baby room, pre-school room). There are cots for those who require a day time sleep, and food is provided. Full time hours.

Working families who require full time care.

After school clubs

Childcare for school aged children who can stay on at their school for an extra hour at the end of the day and partake in activities such as drama, dance or football. Schools may bring in external people to provide the activities or use their own staff. The activities are chargeable but affordable.

Parents who can afford the extra cost who may find the childcare useful due to being at work. These will also be used by families who have an interest in a certain activity (e.g. football) and wish for their child to partake in this and learn more.

Overnight care

This is childcare where the child sleeps overnight at the childminder’s house or nursery. Sometimes the childcare provider can provide the car at the child’s own house.

Parents who work shifts/overnight.

Children’s centres

Daytime centres that parents can visit with their children and undertake a range of activities to help prepare their child for school, learn parenting skills etc.

Any families can use these but disadvantaged families are targeted as they will find the services most useful.

Crèche

These are offered for short term childcare (i.e., couple of hours) to enable mothers to go shopping, use the gym, or study. These facilities are often found in children’s centres, leisure centres and large shops such as IKEA.

Mothers who need to use childcare so that they can carry out an activity (such as exercise, study, shopping) for their own well being.

Respite care for children

Respite for parents with sick children who require round the clock nursing/care. This can be offered at a specialist home or in the child’s house. Parents with sick children who need a break (i.e. to sleep, time to themselves or time with their partner/other children).

Childminder

These are people who work independently who look after other people’s children (usually in addition to their own), using their own home as a base. They have to be accredited by Ofsted and there are rules according to how many children of each age, the childminder may have at a certain time. These are often more personal, flexible and cheaper than using nurseries.

Working parents who may prefer the personal homely approach to childcare and require provision that is cheaper than nursery. Childminders are also used for school-aged children where the parents need to use a childminder to take/collect their child from school, and look after their child/ren in the school holidays.

a) In the Childcare Act 2006, allowance was made for the provision of free early years education. Using the internet to conduct some research into this provision, summarise the conditions of the entitlement in the space provided below.

b) What is the name of the statutory curriculum framework which applies to children in their early years?
