Target Corporation

Executive Summary
Target Corporation has no new imminent threats on its horizon. Its greatest challenge continues to be the problem of competing with Wal-Mart. In order to reduce the threat posed to profits by internal rivalry in the discount retailing industry, Target should focus on two key issues: growth and differentiation. Target has grown consistently in the past. The obvious areas in which Target should concentrate its expansion are markets in the South and Northeast, where there are plenty of attractive locations with no Target stores. New territory also exists in the form of urban areas. Due to size

An early strategic choice to build a brand around the Target name fostered the company's steady growth. From the very beginning, George Dayton's strategy was to position Target as an upscale discount chain at which the prices would be just above the lowest prices. To achieve this upscale image, it offered trendy and stylish goods in an environment that was bright and attractive, unlike other discount stores of the time (HBS Working Knowledge, 2004 para 2). Once a generic strategy is selected Target will also need to consider how to implement its grand strategy to ensure it correlates with its long term goals. In the following paragraphs it describes how Target has identified its best value, and how it has selected a strategy to ensure the company can achieve its long term goals.…

As far as barriers to entry, Targets ability to purchase large quantities and its superior brand loyalty makes it very difficult for new enterprises to enter into its industry and be as successful on a national level as Target. It would cost a significant amount of money from the competitor to attempt Target’s success. Target’s success also comes from the company’s ability to carry various products at a low price. This occurs due to Target’s high level of bargaining power as a buyer in the industry. Therefore, Target’s power enables them to sell products at lower prices than competitors and therefore earn greater revenue from the product. Furthermore, due to Target’s high level of power it has a high level of bargaining power over the suppliers. As a company, Target can demand certain things from their suppliers because it can choose between multiple suppliers. To increase its revenue target has been working towards incorporating new brands to bring in new customers. For example, in the past few years Target has brought in more designer lines such as Converse, to help their store stand out. The enterprise can do this because it is not dependant on any one single supplier for important inputs. In the past years in order to reduce the company’s threat of substitutes and the intensity of its rivalries Target has worked to bring in new brands and items to eliminate the threat of substitute products and commodity products. As mentioned before, the enterprise has been working to bring in more designer labels to attract more high end customers. Also some stores have brought in food items as well as patio furniture to differentiate from its competitors. Target supplies customers with not only nation-wide brands but also store owned brands such as Merona and Xhilaration so that the company itself may create new and different…

For Target the brand is the complete experience for its customers along with the addition of value for your money. This, of course, is only one strategy to stretch the growth of the company. Target has spent years building its brand image and its loyalty among its customers, which is the envy of the retailing world. Target has never been a company to use generic strategies to build their corporation into what it is today. They have needed to be an innovator in retailing and to develop their business model from the ground up. To the level that a corporation grows its business by building upon a core business strategy and the set of skills developed in that business, we can say that it is creating cooperation throughout the business.…

Target’s revenues have increased steadily over the past five years, rising to $65.4 billion in 2009. Despite positive indicators of growth, other retail chains still pose a serious threat, and Target struggles to maintain competitive advantage. From a positive standpoint, Target is intensifying the vision to provide users with superior products by expanding existing stores and continuously incorporating new merchandise. Target’s expansion will likely prove positive for the corporation, but the possibility exists that the expansion will hurt Target due to the large price paid for the expansions (approximately $1 billion) combined with the current unstable economic conditions. The retail industry is dependent on consumer spending. Target’s history of having a higher and less stable debt to equity ratio indicates that it may suffer during troubling economic conditions.…

The organization operates different formats that include Target, Super Target, and Flexible Target Formats. The Target discount store was first opened in Roseville, Minnesota in 1962 (Target Corporation, 2017). The stores have grown significantly to currently cover approximately 136,000 square feet. The discount stores sell general merchandize that include hard lines and soft lines. Most of the Target stores are built following the standard big-box architectural style. The company has also created emphasis on “customizing each new store to ensure a locally relevant experience…that best fits the surrounding neighborhood needs” from August 2006 (Target Corporation, 2017). The philosophy has seen the company invest in products that best capture the situation of their environment thus attracting different clientele based on the location of the store. Initially, the only format that operated in Starbucks Coffee counters was the Super Target. However, Target discount stores were also incorporated into the general merchandize stores using the expanded partnership that began in 2003 (Target Corporation, 2017). The format operates in several locations that include Target Photo, Target Optical, and Target Pharmacy departments. However, the Target Pharmacy departments were purchased by the CVS Health in 2015. It now operates as stores-within-stores under Minute Clinic and CVS Pharmacy mastheads. Target also has a grocery store that operates under the prototype ‘PFresh” that was started in 2006 (Target Corporation, 2017). The introduction has resulted in an expanded grocery selection among general merchandize locations by approximately 200 percent. The offering for the Target branding are, however, more limited compared to the Super Target format. The expansion of the brand to include fresh groceries has necessitated for the creation of an elaborate supply…

The macroenvironmental factors that affected Target's performance during the period were connected to the demographic, economic, natural, technological, political, and cultural. The change in demographic is related to the economy because when there is an unemployment it will create households income to drop while the households expenses increases. Since Wal-Mart is all about low price and Target is all about style and brand, Target thought customers will pay a little more for the brand but they got the opposite reaction from the customers. For an example in the case it says “As unemployment rose and consumers began pinching their pennies, Wal-Mart’s familiar price “rollbacks” resonated with consumers while Target’s image of slightly better stuff for slightly higher prices did not.” This tells you that people did not care about the brand during the unemployment time therefore customers start to buy things that are around there range which made Wal-Mart to have a better image than Target. Target should’ve followed their word “Pay Less” in their slogan and did some kind of survey to get feedback from customers in case they needed to fix something so the customers will not do business somewhere else. Another factor was culture because culture was also a shift that took over by economy. Not every household was affected economically because some people were prepared to face the rough situations ahead before the rising of unemployment and uncertain economic conditions. These are some macroenvironmental factors that affected Target's performance during the…
