Tanglewood Case 7
Tanglewood Case 7 Report

Tanglewood is currently in need of a new manager for their flagship store in Spokane. 20 individuals were contacted as potential candidates, with internal candidates contacted via referrals by regional managers and external candidates that were based on nominations from corporate offices. A total of 10 candidates have taken up the application. The company is in possession of their resumes, retail knowledge tests, standardized test scores from the Marshfield Applicant Exam, biographical data, and two personality dimensions tests. This information will be used in determining the company’s choice for the position.

The importance of the position is relevant in the decision making of the company. The Spokane branch of Tanglewood is the largest store in the entire chain, with almost double the floor space of other stores. The store appearance is also different from the other branches, as the store is only a few blocks away from the original Tanglewood store. It is one of the most elaborately designed stores, with numerous features such as an open kitchen restaurant, an outdoor area with a rock climbing wall and a live kayak simulator, and quarterly demonstrations of the latest clothing options. The Spokane branch, with these features, has shown to be a very profitable venture in the recent years.

Another major reason for the importance of the managerial position is that the store is used as a primary testing ground for new products. Since the store is located at the outer edge of Spokane, majority of their customers are from suburban areas. However, the store’s size and features entice urban and rural customers as well. This allows the Spokane branch to be the ideal location for new product testing, mainly because of the representation of their customers can be found here. This also means that the managerial load at the store is closely related to corporate marketing, which requires an experienced manager who understands the process of

As you learned in the third case, Tanglewood is working to improve the quality of their selection systems. The process of assessing selection methods initiated by Marilyn Anchley was not limited to store associates—it also covered department managers, assistant store managers, and store managers. Although the method of using an increasing number of tests and forms was generally seen as an adequate update to the process for hiring entry level employees, store managers agree that this is not a sufficiently rigorous method for selecting department managers.…

Tanglewood Strategy and Goals: A lot of growth for Tanglewood in the recent past has been by acquisition of existing stores, which combined with a regional structure empowered with autonomous decision making is creating challenges of driving Tanglewood’s unique culture which is a key ingredient of its success. Due to acquisitions, and with the regional structure, there is autonomous decision making at each of the regions, due to which there is a lack of consistency in implementation of corporate policies. Also there is much inefficiency due to lack of common and corporate wide policies and processes which have been identified as areas of improvement. The founders and leaders of Tanglewood realize that unless the company is able to is able to address these issues, and very tightly couple the organizational culture as part of their operations, it would be tough for them to succeed in the new competitive scenario and also take advantage of the opportunities present in the market. The company also has to ensure that it is able to create a motivated and robust work environment with loyal employees, so that they do not go away to competition who would be soon entering the regions that Tanglewood has presence in.…

There has been a large economic boom in the management and professional career fields in the Pacific Northwest so recruitment may be somewhat difficult to find the best of the best.…
