The day before Thanksgiving we drove to downtown Atlanta to the Georgia World Congress and Convention Center. We were amazed by the number of volunteers already there. There were people from all walks of life, executives, athletes, clergy, housewives and fathers, and even some people who were clearly in need themselves.…

There are many tips to make towards the food service production manager of the Madison Metropolitan School District. First, it is so important for them to stay up with the times and also with the politics involving school food service. This can play a pivotal role in several ways starting with things like how long children are given to eat their meals and even how clean the school eating area are there are also guidelines that need to be followed when it comes to the actual nutrition of the food. Second, staying with the times and knowing what the current food trends for breakfast, lunch, and also all of the options for items offered individually can help tremendously in avoiding unsatisfied “customers” or children The last suggestion that I would make would be to pay attention to the current economy to ensure they will find the best staff at a decent cost, volunteers could also help in this area. If these suggestions were put into use it would be a greater long-term advantage to the MMSD.…

The students of Goucher College teach classes and there is ESL and basic computer training. Since the age of 7 years old, I have been a participant of the benevolent organization Junior Achievement. My earliest memory of being a participant of Junior Achievement is when Mr. Michael Troutman visited the Boys & Girls Club of Trenton/Mercer County in 2006.Mr. Troutman taught a lesson about entrepreneurship and I was immediately compelled to learn, when he mentioned how successful entrepreneurs make a lot of money. Using what I had learned from the lesson, I started a candy business. I ran the candy business from June to late August and made a very satisfying profit. Ever since Mr. Troutman came to the Boys & Girls Club, I have stayed involved in Junior Achievement.…

I chose to complete my service learning hours at the Quantum House. It is an organization located on 45th street behind St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, FL. The Quantum House is a supportive home where families can stay while a member of their family is being treated nearby. The Quantum House offers all meals, housing, and entertainment during the entire stay. The families are asked to pay thirty-five dollars per day, but it is never forced if the family is unable to pay. At the center they have a play room, a family laundry room, double kitchen, dining area, living room, a back porch, a garden and an outdoor playground. Each room is furnished just as a hotel is with a private bathroom in each. They are expanding to add more rooms and a larger kitchen and dining, but for now they are able to accommodate ten families. During my service there were nine families staying at the house. All toiletries and kitchen supplies are offered, each room is labeled by different names, such as ‘Hibiscus’ and corresponds with their own kitchen cabinet for their personal kitchen/pantry items, and their own shelf labeled in the refrigerator. All of their meals they provide are either donated by restaurants or made by individuals in the kitchen or at their own kitchen and brought into the Quantum House to serve to the families staying. While I was doing my service, they were having leftovers from the previous night (turkey, sweet potato mash, ham with grilled pineapple, and rice with red beans) donated from Café Boulud.…
