Synthesis Essay: Is Google Making USupid?
“What really makes us intelligent isn’t our ability to find lots of information quickly. It’s our ability to think deeply about that information.” (Is Google Making Us Stupid?) There are very many risks to technology. This is unfortunate because technology rates are growing rapidly. Some risks to technology include causing distractions, and causing addiction. (Source 2) To begin with, a risk of technology is causing distractions. “If we’re distracted we understand less, remember less, and learn less.” (Is Google Making Us Stupid?) That is the major problem with the internet and technology, mostly because when people use their devices they are always distracted. “Scientists say juggling e-mail, phone calls and other incoming information can change how people think and behave.” (Attached to Technology and Paying a Price) They also say that peoples’ ability to focus is being weakened by bursts of information coming from technology and the internet. These bursts cause a primitive impulse to respond to the immediate interruptions. The impulses causes a stimulation of excitement that researchers say can be addictive. Even after “unplugging” people would be craving the stimulation created by the electronic device. (Source 3) In contrary, “…cellphones and computers have transformed life. The y let people escape they’re cubicles and work anywhere. They shrink distances and handle countless mundane tasks…” (Attached to Technology and Paying a Price) But, that doesn’t exceed all the risks that technology causes. Just addiction to technology can cause accidents to many people. One accident that can be caused by addiction is a car crash. A person can get a text while driving and a have the urge to read it. This action can cause a fatal accident. (Source 3) All in all, some risks to technology include causing distractions, and causing addiction. Also besides causing distractions and causing addiction, technology can lead to accidents. Technology is a very risky tool that can be dangerous if used too much.
