Symbolism Of Bilbo In The Hobbit

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Bilbo, the main character, goes through many experiences that changes him. During his adventures with the dwarves and Gandalf, Bilbo is given titles, battles dangerous creatures, and has a run-in with a dragon. Before their expedition, Gandalf gives Bilbo the title of “Burglar”. This is demonstrated in the quote “If I say he’s a Burglar, a Burglar he is, or will be when the time comes” (Tolkien 19). This title is only given to Bilbo so he joins the dwarves in their adventure. Despite this, Bilbo tries to pickpocket a troll. The quote “Bilbo plucked up courage and put his little hand in William’s enormous pocket” (Tolkien 36), demonstrates this. In the beginning of the book, gloin the dwarf mentions that
