Symbolism in "With All Flags Flying"
English 11 Unit 1- The Essay

In the short story With All Flags Flying there are many symbols that represent the aging and elderly. Mr. Carpenter is the protagonist and the main symbol of the short story. He symbolizes most aging people and voices what their notions are towards aging. The people he interacts with throughout the story are also distinguished symbols of their own. As well with many objects he uses or happens to come across.

Mr. Carpenter symbolizes most aging and elderly people. The reason he is the symbol is because he is an elderly man himself. He is concerned for his family and doesn’t want them to have the burden of looking after him, as he is growing old. As he voices in his conversation with Mr. Pond: "But I'm not like some I have known. Hanging around making burdens of themselves, hoping to be loved.
Not me." He also does not wish to be a bitter and weak as he continues aging, but instead a fighter and a happy old man.

The biker that gave him a ride to Mr. Carpenters daughters house on his motorbike symbolizes youth and independence. The freedom of riding a motorcycle and its ability to weave through traffic with ease. His granddaughter Francie gives him a connection to youth. She also is the symbol of unconditional love; love for him and those who are the topic of her many chats with him. Lollie Simpson symbolizes how he wishes to grow older without having to burden his family and be independent. His memory of the schoolteacher is what has guided his vision of how he wishes to grow old. “…when she grew old she would finally eat all she wanted and grow fat without worry.” Mr. Pond is a symbol of how Mr. Carpenter does not want to grow old. He wishes to be a burden to his family and live with them, but they will not let him. So he is a bitter old man that doesn’t wish to be in the old folks home like Mr. Carpenter does.

His brown suit is his symbol of his youth. He purchased it back in 1944 when he was a lot younger; it is the only suit he takes with him when he leaves his home. The Fig Newton’s symbolize age because he notes how age-worn they were when he had them placed out on the bag. “…squashed and pathetic- looking, the edges worn down and crumbling. They seemed to have come from somewhere long ago and far away.” His paper bag that he uses throughout the story to carry his belongings. It started out being new and crisp, but as the story continues, it becomes worn and wrinkled.

Throughout the story you find that every detail related to Mr. Carpenters feelings and attitude towards aging. They all are there to shape the way he wishes to grow old. Mr. Pond is there to remind him about how he does not wish to grow old. His memories of Lollie Simpson give him guidance on what sort of old person he wishes to grow into. Carla is there reminding him of why he wishes to not have to rely on his family. In the end Mr. Carpenter go his way, growing old independently and doing whatever it takes not to be weak in the end.

Krauthammer begins his piece with the heartbreaking massacre that took place in a Charleston church then writes about how gun control has not made any improvement and finally moves into expressing that many want the Confederate flag to be removed. Krauthammer’s article is effective because he uses pathos to capture the heart of the reader, he is a credible writer that has a tone that is professional yet questions…

I believe that the sunlight represents the virtue and goodness in each person. I am not quite sure about the windblown trees, but maybe it could symbolize the tormenting that Hester and Pearl have gone through, especially Hester in the town square, when she was forced to wear her Scarlet letter, and Pearl being ostracized for “being the product of a sin”.…

The rocking chairs represent that a character if the village is feeling stressed or week they would go sit in these rocking chairs and finding strength which would “help” them fight their own problems. [“The moment I heard my daughter's vision had finally failed her and that she would forever be blind I was sitting in that very chair” Edward Walker 1:02:00- 1:02:10.] The village boundaries which are all around the village are also very symbolic. Symbolism is used in this story. Such like the wind chimes, the jade peony and the cat. The most significant symbol in this story is the white cat, with its red eyes, that appears outside the house. This “cat” symbolizes that grandma’s time has come, and that she must move on to her next life where she will be reunited with “the juggler”. This cat bring backs memories and old feelings she had for her lover, and is therefore a significant symbol in this story. At the end of the story the cat revels that he is the symbol of grandma’s old lover. Grandma said that the cat’s eyes were pink, and the pink was also the color of her spirit. She thought the cat was sent by her old lover to take her back. The cat was also the symbol of death. After grandma saw the cat, she was already prepared to die and refused to go to the hospital, because she was a very traditional person, the cat was to bring her back, so there was no way to stop her from dying. The first line contains an image of a “bronze butterfly” sleeping on a trunk. This stagnant description of such a beautiful creature demonstrates a slowly moving life, one of which hasn’t achieved much. The trunk that the butterfly is sleeping on is colored black, representing the man’s missed opportunities to leave the farm. The next line portrays a leaf blowing down a ravine found behind an empty house. Obviously the empty house and the later heard cowbells in the distance (implying that the cows are leaving the farm) are clear images of the man’s loneliness. The speaker moves on to spot some horse manure. This dung, after being left for over a year, has dried and is turning into stones. The changing of this manure symbolizes the man’s changing into an old, lifeless man. Just as the manure does, the longer the man sits there and waits for something, the more prone he is to dry up and waste his life. Before the last line of the poem, the speaker mentions the setting sun and the evening that approaches as he lays back in his hammock. A chicken hawk, a well-known hunter, flies by the man and looks for his home, just as the man is looking for his home — or the place where he belongs. As the evening envelops the man, all of these apparently “beautiful” images (yet symbolically depressing messages) pushes the man to realize that his life has become…

Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. As the narrator tells his story, he refers to the couple as youths and never anything more than that. Carver writes, “They were kids themselves, but they were crazy in love, this eighteen-year-old boy and this seventeen-year-old girl when they married”. Symbolically, Carver means that they were in no means ready to get married due to the fact that they were just kids and not mature enough to make a commitment such as marriage even though they were madly in…

The use of personification in the poem creates a picture in the reader's mind of what the speaker felt and saw on that November day. Personification also helps connect the feeling of November to the feeling that the speaker felt when he saw the homeless man in the ally. The man sees a person whose legs were “splayed out wide” and who’s “head lolled to one side.” To begin with, the man believes he has seen someone who is “a victim of crime” and we feel sympathy for him. However as the man gets closer he hears an urchin child say “Spare a penny for the…

What the United States flag means to me is freedom. I hear the stories of the people who have their whole life chosen for them in different countries. Which sounds absolutely horrifying to me. I enjoy being able to decide my future like what kind of job i'm going to have or what college I’m going to go to. I don’t want that taken away from me.The Flag also ensures me as much safety as possible. What I mean by that is we have so many people who risked their life and are risking their life right now to keep that flag standing. All those people who have died died to ensure that I and everyone else live free and that means the world to me.…

Symbols are everywhere, embodying meanings larger than life. One can find symbolism in music, literature, and even in decoration! They play huge roles in specific themes or emotions in certain situations. In “Masque of the Red Death”, by Edgar Allan Poe, death is personified, terror reigns, and tragedy strikes, as he tells a short tale of the infamous “Black Plague” that reigned over Europe in the middle ages, and how death is absolutely inevitable. In the story, Poe used an intense amount of symbolism within the seven colored chambers to establish the mood of the story, the seven stages of life, and to emphasize the terror of the situation.…
