Harper Lee has used symbolism broadly all throughout the novel of ‘To kill a Mockingbird’. A great deal of the story refers to the problems of racism in the South during the early twentieth century. The symbol, which was prominent to me, was the scene of the mad dog in chapter 10. This symbol of the dog in the scene really reinforces the ideas of good vs. evil, and courage. The scene shows Atticus is the good and the dog is the evil inside their community.…

Dear Jay Asher (author), In the United States today, more than 11,000 books have been challenged or banned. Many people disagree with how authors write about graphic topics like sex, drugs, partying, abuse, religion and much more. Although, what they fail to realize is how accurate these topics written about are to the everyday events in our lives. The banning of your book, Thirteen Reasons Why, is unreasonable and unfair because it focuses on suicide which is a growing issue today, emphasizes the importance of one’s actions, and addresses relevant topics of our time.…

In the short story “Eleven” there are many examples of symbolism and sensory detail throughout the story. An example of sensory detail from the story is when the narrator says “Because the way you grow old is kind of like an onion or like the rings inside of a tree trunk” this is using the sense of sight. Another example of sensory detail is when the author says “only today I wish I didn’t have only eleven years rattling inside me like pennies in a tin Band-Aid box” this is using the sense of sound. An example of symbolism is in the story is the number 11 because it represents who the narrator is. The narrator mentions several times that even though she is 11 she is says she is 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 all together which is implying that she is still a little sensitive and acts younger than she really is this explains how she got so upset over a sweater and cried. The birthday cake symbolizes her need to be older because she says in the story that she wish was 102 so she would know what to do and she connects them a lot in the story when she said she wants to be 102. A example of sensory detail in the story is when Rachael says “I put one arm through one sleeve of the sweater that smells like cottage cheese” she is using her sense of smell. She also uses sensory detail when she says “the red sweater’s still sitting there like a big red mountain” she refers to her sense of sight. In conclusion, there are many examples of symbolism and sensory detail throughout the story.…

Words are not limited to one single meaning. Most words have multiple meanings, which are categorized as either denotative or connotative. The denotation of a word is its explicit definition as listed in a dictionary. The expressiveness of language, however, comes from the other type of word meaning—connotation, or the association or set of associations that a word usually brings to mind. In Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” there are many examples of connotation and symbolism for example the denotation of the word Mallard: The name of a wild duck, associated with the male ducks. Could be a symbol for the subconscious will that man and women control each-other with that Chopin describes. Storm of grief: This refers to the way Chopin describes Mrs. Mallard’s reaction to the news of her husband’s death. This relates her feelings to the weather. Death of Mr. Mallard vs. Description of new spring life: Spring is usually associated with life and birth, however, Chopin sets Mr. Mallard’s death against spring. This could mean that Brently’s death was a rebirth for Mrs. Mallard and she could be free. “As a child who had cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dreams” vs. “Like a goddess of Victory”: This description of Mrs. Mallard’s change in feelings after accepting Brently’s death indicates that according to the story now that she is an individual she is in control of her life. Abrupt ending and description of Mrs. Mallard’s death: This could be used to leave the reader questioning the story or could be an indication that the author feels that without freedom from the control of Brently Mrs. Mallard is better off dead. There is connotation in the fact she had died from heart disease. She did die from a heart attack on a denotation standpoint, but could it have been that her heart was crushed after being filled with the joy of freedom and her life head of her. This destruction of freedom she had come to realize and welcome was…
