The Giver; Dystopian classic published in 1993, explores the utopian society that embraces sameness. Engineered through genetic and social selection, sameness is the glue holding together the community in with the protagonist Jonas lives. The text appeals to the audience of young adults because of its relatable theme; The Giver is about the process in which young adults begin to understand the harsh realities and truths of the world, this directly correlates to the audience's context at the time of reading.…
Stuffed toys, hair ribbons, and beginning school. What do those things have in common? They all represent childhood and getting older. In “The Giver” by Lois Lowry, the theme is growing up. There are three main symbols that prove that the theme is growing up. The symbols are the ceremony, the children getting their careers, and the house of the old.…
The Giver by Lois Lowry includes a major concept of Freedom. Freedom may come easily to some people but in The Giver people don´t have the freedom of choice or even the freedom to express feelings , they get to make no choice such as what they would like to do as a career, who they would like to marry additionally their not even allowed to love someone let alone expressing it. The Giver reveals the horrible outcomes of a community which has relinquished their freedom to secure its safety. In this essay the points which will be stated include…
Drink apple juice, because OJ will kill you. This paper is about the symbolism in The Giver. More importantly three main ideas that really defined symbolism in this book. These three ideas are the river, the sled and the newborn child, Gabriel. These ideas had the biggest impact of the world in the book. They produced the biggest effects to the characters and to the plot. It made me think deeper and it explained more in detail. These ideas gave my mind things to think about. It produced questions and curiosity about the world they lived in, and it made me understand the book better. In The Giver, Lois Lowry emphasizes the symbols of the sled, the river, and the newborn child Gabriel.…
Imagine a world that no one can see color, can't feel feelings, or doesn’t know what snow is. In the "Giver" made by Lois Lowry, this is true. For the elders, they think that the memories are bad because memories can cause war, famine, sadness, and more. But they are wrong. Memories also contain love, friendship, happiness, courage, and knowledge. When the Elders locked all of the memories into one person everyone lost color except for that one person. They wanted everything to be predictable so they removed many things like hills, animals and other things that are unpredictable so this way everything is sameness. What if every day was the same, wake up, eat, go to work/school, go home, eat, sleep. Life is about not knowing what will happen. That’s why it's better to be fully aware than to be happy and ignorant…
In the book Giver by luis Lois Lowry has the theme of importance of the individuality. Jonas’s community is planned elaborately, and supposed to be perfect with none of dangerous accidents or risks. Life in that community should be perfect according to the Committee of Elders. There is no freedom of choice in the community or creativity. Everyone has to live how the community has designed for him or her. Emotions, feelings, personalities, and uniqueness of an individuality are forbidden, everyone should be the same and ‘perfect’. This book shows the value of the individuality, and how it effects to the individual's, family unit, and the society as a whole.…
Imagine if everyone had the same house and the same bicycle. There would be no diversity. People would not be able to express themselves in the way that they wanted to, only the way that the government chose for them. Over time in “The Giver”, the inability to choose made the people of the community lack emotion. They did not care about what other people thought about them. For example, Jonas once said, “I certainly liked the memory, though. I can’t see why it’s your favorite. I couldn’t quite get the word for the whole feeling of it, the feeling that was so strong in the room.” Then the Giver replied to him, “Love”(157). This shows that until Jonas became the Receiver of Memory he was mostly incapable of having true emotions such as love, the strongest emotion on Earth. Only a fixed, controlling society could make others feel this way. It takes away the emotion, the love, the colors. It takes away what makes us…
“If everything’s the same, then there aren’t any choices! I want to wake up and decide things.”(Jonas) “It’s the choosing that’s mordant, isn’t it?”(Giver). In the Newbery award winning novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry is about a future dystopian. In this society everything is the same and no one sees colors, feels pain, or make decisions for themselves. The idea of “sameness” is totally unfair. When you don’t get to have any choices, feelings, or personalities, it just takes the human out of humanity.…
“If work and leisure are soon to be subordinated to this one utopian principle- absolute busyness- then utopia and melancholy will coincide: an age without conflict will dawn, perpetually busy- and without consciousness.”-Gunter Grass. Living in a perfect world is not worth giving up your choices. Without our choices, there would be several necessities missing from our human lives. Having a perfect world would eliminate a true family unit, a graduation, and a job.…
'The Giver' and Ready Player One portray similar and different aspects on dystopian features. This is shown through the political, social, environmental and class of both settings.…
Almost every day people with great intentions try to create a utopia of any kind. In the path towards a utopia there are many things which one must sacrifice in order to achieve the utopia which has always been a dream of many. However, sometimes the price to create a utopia is too much to pay and in ‘The Giver’ the price is definitely too much to pay. Therefore, the ‘community’ is definitely more of a dystopia opposed to being a utopia because everyone behaves as if they are incompetent of feeling, emotion, all civilians of the community have limited prerogatives and limited decisions which they are allowed to make and the fact that differences are not tolerated leans the ‘community’ towards a dystopia as opposed to utopia. However, the largest price which the community has payed by far is the fact that almost no one has any memories of the past. Sadly, almost no one except ‘The Giver’ and Jonas are bothered by this, as no one in the community besides selected few (such as ‘The Giver’, chief elder and Jonas) are aware of what they are missing.…
What would life be like living in a community that only sees black and white? Why couldn’t the community make its own choices? Why have memories been taken away? Could there be another dimension out of the world that relates to the society in the novel, The Giver?…

He becomes Receiver and as Receiver he has to take the burden of the memories of the past world and endure the mistakes they had made. Jonas changes throughout The Giver and as a result, tries to change the Community.…
I believe everyone in the community will not be able to learn efficiently if everything is the same. The Giver states that everything is as close to same as anyone can get. If everything is the same, how can one learn about true life? If life doesn’t have mistakes, how can one learn efficiently I believe this is to hide the outside world, not to protect the people.…
Many readers try to decide whether the community in The Giver is a utopia or a dystopia. After reading The Giver and learning the characteristics of utopias and dystopias I have come to the conclusion that Jonas’s community is a dystopia because of the lack of color, the existence of sameness, and the very controlling government.…
