History is compilation of data and materials gathered throughout time and analyzed to form some consensus of what happened in the past. A common way people learn about history is through reading and memorizing textbooks and historical literature. This can be an effective way of understanding the past but it is important to not overlook other ways of understanding the past such as artwork. Although artwork may not always tell the person about specific knowledge, it may sometimes give more information that other sources could not. The important thing to note about historical artwork is that it shows the scholar insight about what the people of the time thought of themselves and not what other people thought of them. In this way, artwork acts as a primary source and gives off first hand information about a people’s own culture. Specifically,…
As the course textbook states, "the arts give form to what is imagined, express human beliefs and emotions" (xv) and "for the majority of their history, artists have expressed the dominant beliefs of a culture" (xv). When studying the humanities, you can examine written works, musical works, works of art, and architecture to get a sense of what the creators of those works and the cultures from which those creators came believed. Much of this involves placing these artifacts into the context of what is known from other sources about the creators and cultures. A major part also involves looking at just the artifacts themselves to examine and interpret what their form and content reflect. This assignment asks you to follow this process of looking…
Symbolism, Imagery, AllegoryThe big, black, creep clock is located in the black room, so it's not that hard to guess that it's meant to be a symbol of death. More precisely, it's a symbol of the passing of "the Time that flies" (5), and the inevitability of death. Its eerie chiming on the hour is a regular reminder to the revelers that their lives are drifting away with the time, and that death is approaching. Of course, the effect is enhanced even more by that way the clock has of stopping all the dancing and music – in short, all the life – of the party, and making everyone laugh nervously. The abbey is a place of confinement. It's cut off and secluded (hidden away where no one can find it). Beyond that, its doors are welded shut from the inside. Which means everyone's…
Two works of art that distinguish artistic roles very well are Jahangir in Darbar, and Claude Monet’s representation of Gare Saint-Lazare. In the painting Jahangir in Darbar, the artist makes a visual record of an audience that Jahangir is holding at court. This allows observers to place themselves in this setting. Also, the diversity of the crowd signifies the ethnic and religious tolerance of the Mughal court (A World of Art, 2010)…
Early Buddhist art were often aniconic as the Buddha was represented in art by using imagery and symbols and not as a person. Art pieces however, often contain religious message, iconography and symbols such as the lion. Other items in their art that reinforced the Buddhist religion was the wheel which or wheel of life which symbolized the religious belief of reincarnation, birth, and death which is helps to reinforce Buddha’s teachings. Stupas were also formed and created artistically to represent Buddha’s teaching including the wheel of life. The path around the stupa even symbolized the wheel of life or path of life. They often contained a chattra, which also reinforces the spiritual path of the believer because the three tiers represent…
Or even how the destruction of life and horrible habits make up a huge piece of us as human beings. These works of art fit perfectly into their culture and their belief of a higher being than yourself. They are not some rebellious photo of some unknown god or selfish person. They show gods that were once worshipped and still are worshipped by millions of people world wide. I believe that these works and the meanings behind them do represent challenges to humanity.…
Islamic art is unlike the art of many other cultures. The main reason for this difference is that the subjects of Islamic art are strictly controlled by the religious beliefs held by Muslims. Any Muslim artist must work within strict guidelines, largely set out in the Qur 'an, when producing any work of art. These guidelines define what is acceptable as a subject for a work of art and also the form that any work of art may take. The forms of art that are deemed acceptable and their symbolism give an indication of the intention of Islamic art. I will attempt to show through examples of different types of Islamic art that the intention of Islamic art is merely to suggest and not to portray the divine presence.…

The crisis of questioning the status quo of art academies plagued artists and was represented in their art. Artists such as Gustave Courbet was conflicted in his relationship with the art academies claiming that he was sent taught and believed that art was an individual activity. This idea is portrayed in his The Painter’s Studio: A Real Allegory Summing Up Seven Years of My Life as an Artist. While his painting portrayed the persona of abrasive, independent, and self-confident, Eugene Delacroix commented that his art had a sense of ambiguity intertwined within.Édouard Manet’s Olympia was accepted by the 1865 Salon despite its quite scandalous subject. Similar to Courbet, Manet’s piece alluded to art past and present. Although critiques were…
Artwork featuring religious themes is extremely beautiful and meaningful. When religion is portrayed through art there is rich symbolism and iconography. Because religious art is so important I decided to use such works in my exhibit, each piece is a wonderful representation of religions in art.…
In James Joyce’s supposedly timeless novel, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Joyce uses symbolism and imagery to allude to mythology, and Christian allusions as well, in all kinds of different ways, even in Stephen’s surname, Dedalus. This mastery of imagery adds a whole new layer to the novel, if only for the more learned audience that understands these allusions. The allusions referred to in this essay are those in chapters three and four of the novel, as they are very apparent in this section of the literature.…
When the religious art leaks out of the religious community and into the broader world of culture, it is one of the ways the meaning of the art can evolve. This is also an…
