ESP Syllabus – English for Hospital Receptionists

1. Target Group:
Age| Adults from 21 to 57|

2. Main Aim:

English for Hospital Receptionist is aimed to prepare learners to use a narrow range of English for Hospital receptionist, adequate for basic medical communication between patients, families’ patients and medical stuff.

3. Course Description:

This course is designed for hospital receptionists, who deal with medical services and medical situations. After completing the course, the learners are expected to have good ability to communicate in English for medical situations and services. In classroom setting, the learners are required to have pair conversation, group discussion, role-play, games, as well as individual work. The classroom activities will emphasize more independence and active participation of the learners so they can polish up and practice their speaking skills.

4. Objectives:

Students will be able to:

* Familiarize both formal and informal means of communicating in English for professional activities. * Use basic functions and grammar needed to communicate in a professional environment. * Extend basic medical vocabulary, functional language, especially those used in medical communication. * Build 4 basic skills in English (especially emphasize in speaking.

5. Contents:

a. This course will be developed in 64 hours divided into 4 hours per week. The total of weeks will be 16.

Week 1
Unit 1: Hospital Environment I
Topics| * Introduction to the ESP course. * Introducing yourself and other people.| Language Skills and Knowledge| Listening: Listening about how people get to know each other.Speaking: Introducing Yourself & other People.Reading: Different types of introducing people.Writing: Complete an application with your information. Grammar: Verb to be with. Yes or no questions and short answers. Functional Language: Introduce yourself, spell names, ways of saying thank you. |

Week 2
Unit 2: Hospital Environment II
Topics| * Finding out personal information. * Supplying information.| Language Skills and Knowledge| Listening: Listening where people ask for personal information.Speaking: How to give information requested.Reading: Different types of identification forms and documents. Writing: Complete an application form from a patient. Grammar: Wh – Questions and answers with it’s. Verb to be. Functional Language: Asking for personal details. Exchange for personal information (names, phone numbers, e-mail address, etc.) |

Week 3
Unit 3: Hospital Environment III
Topics| * Receiving messages. * Making request. * Giving advice and making suggestions.| Language Skills and Knowledge| Listening: Listening about a phone conversation.Speaking: How to make requests at a hospital.Reading: Different types of phone conversation about a hospital. Writing: Write a letter of suggestion for the hospital.Grammar: Present simple. Yes or no questions and short answers. There is, there are... Imperatives.Functional Language: taking phone messages. Making requests about specifics situations. Ask and say where people are. Giving advice|
