Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street
SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET

There was a man named Benjamin Barker. He is undeniably the most accomplished barber in all Victorian London and is very famous because of his skills. He is married to the very beautiful Lucy and they have a lovely child, Johanna. The beauty of Lucy attracts the attention of the maniac Judge Turpin, who had lusted Lucy and falsely accuses the barber of a crime that he did not commit and banished him so that he can have Lucy to himself.
After fifteen years in exile, Benjamin returns to London with a young sailor man named Anthony under the new identity of Sweeney Todd. He is determined to seek vengeance against the Judge for taking his wife. As he reached London, he immediately went to the place where he and his family resided. At Mrs. Lovett's meat pie shop on Fleet Street, he learns that Lucy poisoned herself. Todd's teenage daughter is now Turpin's ward and like her mother, she is the object of Turpin's lust. After hearing the news, Todd vows revenge. He reopened his barber shop after Mrs. Lovett returns his old razors to him.
While roaming London, Anthony spots a pretty young woman singing in an upstairs room of a large house. He asks the beggar for her name. Anthony instantly fell in love with her and planned to steal her from the judge. The Judge saw him and invites him in. Though the Judge warns Anthony that he will be punished if he is seen there again, the sailor becomes more convinced that he and Johanna are meant to be together as she gave her the key to her room.
During a visit to the marketplace, Todd witnessed a fraudulent hair tonic by a barber, Pirelli, and humiliates him in a public shaving contest. He gained the attention of Beadle Bamford after winning. Few days later, Pirelli and his boy assistant Toby arrived. Mrs. Lovett keeps Toby occupied downstairs, while in the parlor Pirelli tells Todd that he recognize him and threatens to reveal Todd's secret to Beadle Bamford unless Todd gives him

The main character, the barber, an important character in the development of the story, has to deal with a life changing decision; he can either kill his enemy, Captain Torres, or he can choose a higher path and give him the perfect shave. Firstly, the barber has too much pride in his work. ‘’One of the tiny pores could be opened up and issue forth its pearl of blood. A good barber such as I prides…

In the story “Lather and Nothing Else” the barber is the villain. For instance, the barber claims he is on the “opposing side” of Torres, as he says “I [am] on the side of the existing regime” (Téllez 182). This proves he is the villain, as a regime is a word used to describe a group/government that values order and control over personal freedom. Moreover, the barber recognizes that letting Torres leave his shop alive is a questionable decision. This is shown through one of the barber’s thoughts, “it would be difficult to explain that I…let him go in peace, alive [and] clean shaven” (Téllez 182). This represents that at an early part of the book, Torres is yet to do anything moderately dangerous, and the barber is still worrying about leaving…

“Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is a well known play and musical capturing the audience’s attention as to what can happen behind closed doors. I will be reporting the background context of the musical and how Victorian life could influence the storyline and characters. I will cover historical, social, political, economical, cultural and technical aspects of the musical. “Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (which I will now refer to as “Sweeney Todd”) originated from a play by Christopher Bond, then a musical with a book. The music and lyrics for the musical was written by Stephen Sondheim and was first performed in 1979. The book was written by Hugh Wheeler. “Sweeney Todd” is set in Victorian London, primarily Fleet Street. The main characters are; Sweeney Todd, Mrs. Nellie Lovett, Judge Turpin, Beadle Bamford, Johanna, Anthony and Tobias (Toby). The themes of “Sweeney Todd” are mainly love and revenge but other themes are underlying throughout the story. To start reporting my research I will discuss the historical findings and its origins in greater depth.…

It is difficult to decide which is the right decision to make when a situation presents itself. Normally, people carefully think over the consequences both positive and negative and we may believe that we have made the right choice although, others may not think so. The barber's choice in the short story, "Lather and Nothing Else" written by Hernando Tellez, is negotiable. He is secretly a member of the resistance that is fighting against the government. The conflict is introduced when Captain Torres, an executioner, walks into the barber’s shop to get shaved. That gives the barber an opportunity to kill him and become a hero. As the barber shaves him he contemplates every possible outcome of any action he could make towards the captain of the enemy and finally decides against killing him. His reputation as a barber and his very chance at being alive would be at stake, and also he does not want to lose his morals and live with a guilty conscience. These reasons are why his choice is a heroic act on his part.…

First of all, the story “Lather and Nothing Else” deals with inner struggle. The main character, the barber, is secretly a member of the resistance against the government. The conflict is introduced when Captain Torres, an executioner, walks into the barber’s shop to get shaved. That gives the barber an opportunity to kill him and become a hero. The main character then becomes very conflicted. If he decides to kill Cpt. Torres he could escape to another country, but he would still have to live with the fact that he killed someone and that feeling would haunt him for the rest of his life. The barber debated the situation in his head. Perhaps he believed killing someone would lower himself to the captain’s level. The main character came to the decision that he would not kill the captain. The barber believed he did his work honorably and didn’t want to stain his hands with blood. “To each his own. That’s the way it is. To each his own.” The lesson the author intends the readers to learn is to always weigh out the pros and cons before making a difficult choice in life.…

The play I have studied is Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare. The character I believe deserves the title heroine is Portia. Portia, as I will explain is quite an atypical hero figure. She is rich and beautiful, so we assume wrongly at first that she will be spoilt and inconsequential to the action of the play. This could not be further from the truth. Portia is not to be underestimated. Without Portia, there would be no titular merchant at the end of this Romantic Comedy.…
