In the last few decades, limited resources of the world put pressure on societies. Consequently, the concept of the sustainability has become widespread in the business world in order to meet the demand of the society. Under the name of the Corporate Social Responsibility, companies run sustainability activities for staying competitive in their industries in the recent years. Nevertheless, besides commercial concerns, the ethical aspect of the sustainability requires an organizational sense for the implementation. As a result of these facts, sustainability has also become a popular change management challenge for companies since it requires an organizational change. Conscience dimension of the sustainability also generates extra challenges for choosing the accurate change management approach for driving the change. The mental change of individuals plays a crucial role for adapting the sustainability to the organizational culture. During the different stages of the change process, the combination of the individual, the group and the organization approaches can be applied in order to build up a dynamic organizational sustainability culture.
Change management, which is the term most everyone uses, refers to a set of basic tools or structures intended to keep any change effort under control. The goal is often to minimize the distractions and impacts of the change. (Kotter 2011) In order to reach this goal, we may apply three different approaches belonging to different schools of thought for change management. Nevertheless, there is no one size fits all solution for the change management. First of all, the Individual Perspective School focuses on individuals for managing the change. This school of thought supports that the organizational change can be successfully obtained by changing the understanding of individuals. As long as individuals are kept motivated by various incentives, they can lead the change in organizations. The Group Dynamics School suggests that the change can be brought through groups in an organization. According to this thought, values, norms and roles in the groups affect the behaviors of individuals within those groups. Therefore, if the change can be implemented in the group scale, individuals will follow the group and adjust themselves for the change. The Open Systems School argues that the change implementations can be done in the organizational scale rather than individual or group scale. The overall synergy within the organization is enough to bring the achievement in the change process. According to this approach, organizations consist of several interconnected subsystems and these subsystems affect not only each other but also the whole organization. All these three schools of thought can be applied separately or can be combined in various cases. The case of Floors ‘R’ World is about a carpet tile manufacturer, which had serious challenges in transforming all its operations to a sustainable manner.
