Survival Essay

Christopher Orobinsky Class: 831
Extreme environments are places where “normal” life finds it hard or impossible to survive. To survive in an extreme environment you need intelligence and the will to survive. In “The Story of Keesh” by Jack London Keesh kills polar bears to survive because he gets little food from the tribe. He does this by using his brains instead of brute force. In the “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel, Pi uses his brains to access food and water. In these two stories Pi and Keesh both use survival skills to survive in their extreme environments.
In “The Story of Keesh” by Jack London Keesh uses whale bone covered in meat to injure the polar bears that he hunts and then he would finish the polar bear with his spear. For example in paragraph 65 the author states “ The bear swallows the round ball, the blubber melts , the bear gets sick, and when the bear is very sick, why, you kill him with a spear.” This shows how Keesh uses “head craft” rather than his strength to kill the polar bear. This relates to extreme environments because Keesh uses his own intelligence and survival skills to gain meat and survive in his extreme environment.
In the “Life of Pi” Pi uses his brain to find water and food without getting attacked by Richard Parker. Pi also uses his brains to open the of water he found when there wasn’t a can opener so instead he used the tarpaulin hooks that where on the boat. For example on paragraph 38 the author states “I had a can—surely I had a can opener? I looked in the locker. There was a great quantity of thing. I rummaged about. I was losing patience.” Then he thought of the idea of using the tarpaulin hooks. If he had not thought of doing this he would have died of thirst because he would not have thought of a way to open the can. After Pi had become “drunk on water” he decided that he was hungry so he got a carton of food to eat. Not only did Pi survive because of his quick thinking but he also survived

Nomads were wanderers that had no technical home. Four groups of nomads were the Turks, Afghan and Seljuk, the Vikings, the Mongols, and the Huns. When the Mongols went to Europe, they brought the Bubonic Plague; they caused the reunification of the Russians, and helped start Pax Mongolica. They allowed the conquered to keep their ways of life and religions as long as they obeyed the foreign rulers. The decentralization of Japan and Western Europe was helpful and a hindrance by being more organized, using feudalism and causing more chaos.…

    Essay On Survival Lottery

I would object to the idea of “The Survival Lottery”. The proposal of the survival lottery mainly centres on the claim that there is no difference between killing and letting die, and that leaving Y and Z to die without any interventions would be the same as murdering them. Thus, instead of killing both Y and Z, the doctor should kill A, a third-party, and save both Y and Z's lives, because such action would result in a total of one death instead of two. Since it would be begging the question to argue whether if there is a difference between killing and letting die, we, at this time being, can assume that they are the same. It may seem that utilitarians ought to be in favour of this proposal as it result in maximum utility. However, my concern is that the calculation in total amount of happiness might not be as simple as it appears to be.…

I was coming home from a “Summer of a Lifetime” which was also known as Celebration Iowa, a travelling show choir and jazz band in the state of Iowa. It took all summer and caused me to realize I would be going home to live with my aunt and my uncle, and not have any mode of transportation but them. They both lead quite busy lives, my Aunt Kris, is a professor of Education at Central College in Pella, Iowa, and my Uncle Doug is the head band director at Oskaloosa High School. This means they were both gone a lot, for meetings, and faculty parties. Which would leave me at home with no car, or mooching off of friends for rides. I knew this would not work out, which is when I called my cousin and that’s when the relationship started.…
