Hero
What does someone mean when they call them a hero? Is it someone who has a supernatural ability they use to save the world, as well as stop disastrous situations? Do they fly into a burning building and save your kid, or stop a bank robber with their spider web? Indeed we were all influenced by characters with superpowers, believing one day we can grow up, and one day use powers such as those of Superman or Spiderman to one day save the world. However as we mature, we eventually learn that we may not have a supernatural power, but we all have a mind of our own, where we can create opinions and thoughts and use those beliefs as superpowers of our own to influence the world as it is today, for a better tomorrow. ‘In the poem Beowulf, when word had reached Higlac’s follower and the strongest of the Geats, of how Grendel filled the nights with horror. Beowulf went all the way to heorot, having to travel on boat and sail across the sea, for many miles where help was greatly needed. Beowulf was determined to kill the evil monster, who was murdering the king’s men for many years” (Beowulf, 109-116). One man alone was brave enough to offer his help where others couldnt. He chose to come and help end the suffering to these people. He knew of Grendels evil “So Grendel ruled, fought with the righteous, one against many, and won; so Herot stood empty, and stayed deserted for years, twelve winters of grief for Hrothgar”(Beowulf, 59-63). He even proves his determination by stating to the king “that this one favor you should not refuse me; that I alone and with the help of my men, may purge all evil from this hall”(Beowulf, 165-166).
