Suchithwa Bodhana Yajanam
Fund Raising
I joined the Rajagiri Outreach Project as an intern with three of my collegues on 26th December 2012. We were immediately assigned to assisting in the organizing of the Suchithwa Bodhana Yajnam Padayatra (Cleanliness Awareness Drive and Rally) which was to commence on January 1st 2013 at Alwaye. The first responsibility handed over to us by the organizers of the Suchithwa Bodhana Yajnam was the fundraising for the Padayatra.
The Organizers gave us a brief about the fund requirments which was mainly for refreshements for students and other people joining in the rally on each day and also for facilitating a few students at the schools and colleges for their efforts in promoting sustainability. The method used by the organizers for fund raising was giving opportunity for advertisements for sponsors in a advertisement hoarding vehicle which moved along with the rally on all 15 days. The charges for a 60 CM x 30 CM slot of advertisement were Rs 1000(multiple slots could be taken by the sponsorer).
As management students, we were asked to primarily focus on canvasing companies that were credible enough for a 15 year long partnership with the cleanliness initiative of the Rajagiri Outreach Project. As part of the fundraising procedure, we approached the following companies.
Nippon Toyota, Kalamassery.
F.S College, Alwaye.
Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samidhi, Alwaye.
Platina Classic BMW, Vyttilla.
Seemas, Alwaye.
K A Mathew Foundation, Cochin.
Muthoot Pappachan Charity Foundation, Cochin.
Mir Constructions, Cochin.
We were able to arrange for an appointment at Nippon Toyota to present the benefits of a partnership that they could have with our initiative. As part of our visit to the office of Nippon Toyota at Kalamassery, we were able to have an hour long discussion with their Senior Marketing Manager, Mr. Vijay. The discussion concluded with a mutual understanding for a proposal to be send by us to Nippon

Toyota Motor Corporation was first introduced to the United States in 1957. Team C chose Japan as its international market because of its increase in production, sales, and exports. Japan has been supportive of Toyota products, selling over millions of units within the past year. The reason for this increase is because of the availability of cars that Toyota offers, providing superior gas mileage and a compact structure. For example, cumulative sales in Japan of its hybrid vehicles have sold more than half of the units produces globally, which marks more than one million vehicles sold (Toyota News Releases, 2010). In July alone, Toyota has seen a major increase in the production, sales, and exports on an average of 14.1% (Toyota News Releases, 2010). Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC): The Lexus RX 330 Line 1 On the day of April, 25th 2000, Greig Arnold found himself both anxious and excited as he approached the offices of Toyota’s worldwide headquarters in Toyota City, Japan. He was about to meet with the Chairman of global operations, Ikebuchi Nakatani, at the world’s third largest automaker. His hope was to convince the Chairman to support his company’s bid for the new Lexus RX 330 line, which would be the first of its kind manufactured outside of Japan. This would not be easy. Greig, along with the President of the division, was part of a delegation from the Toyota subsidiary in Canada, the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC), which was 100% owned by the Toyota Motor Corporation. Although he was the Director of Operations at the Cambridge, Ontario plant, decision-making was very much a consensus-building process at Toyota and involved not only the President but inputs from line employees as well. After all, he was part of a company that was famous for its quality production system and employee involvement initiatives embodied in terms such as Total Quality Management and kaizen, Japanese for Continuous Improvement. All of these had originated within the company and were now standard terms in most business schools. Greig knew the strengths of having the global company locate its newest manufacturing venture at his plant but at the same time also knew that he had to act in accordance with the company’s values and ways of doing business. Meanwhile, Ikebuchi Nakatani looked over the one sheet of A3 paper in front of him with intense eyes. The paper took up only 14 inches by 10, but within it was information that helped him cope with making a decision that would be worth multiple millions of yen and could perhaps put the reputation of the company’s premier vehicles on the line. As the Chairman of global operations he was one of the highest authorities for making the final decision as to where the new…

For a long time there has been an alignment of Toyota vision with both Japanese culture and national and international stakeholders. This alignment can be seen in our opinion according two different perspectives: from the innovation activity and from the social responsibility (attention for environment). Referring to the innovation of the product process, Toyota has always been one of the leader in creating high-level cars both from mechanical and electronic aspect as it is typical of Japanese economy. The Japanese business is traditionally known at a global level for its profitable performance concerning the management of electronic and mechanical activities. From this point of view there was a perfect alignment between internal and the external vision. In relation to social responsibilty, the Japanese culture shows a great concern on energy conservation and environment, that is the reason why Toyota has traditionally supported these aspects in the car production process. In 1998, Toyota received an important award for the production of Prius ( the world’s first passenger vehicle in mass production powered by a third power train system). The introduction of Prius in the market, allowed the company to make a clear statement on its commitment of environmental protection. During the following years, the company gained many awards and leader position in environmental technology field. Recently, in relation to these two perspectives of analysis, a misalignment can be verified for the following three reasons: 1) Toyota has focused too much on cost control and economies of scale, leaving out esthetic and design aspects, creating too much standardized cars ( a same kind of product all over the world). In this case we found the first gap because of the different expectations of the worldwide stakeholders in comparison with Japanese and Toyota culture ,…
