Sunrise Over Fallujah is about the war in Iraq. It is a story about the Civil Affairs Unit. Not many books are based on this unit in the military because it is not the unit that people think of while looking for a military based novel. It is the group that focuses on the people in the region they are stationed. This is book is by Walter Dean Myers, he has written many great novels and is a great author that portrays many useful themes. Many people think this book has no theme/meaning, they are wrong, there are multiple themes in this wonderful book. While reading this book, one of the most valuable themes that a reader might learn is “where you come from does not matter, we are all human”. Robin was from Harlem, this part of New York is not what would consider family friendly, it is a very ghetto place to live. Robin and all of his friends told everyone in their unit where they were from and none of his other unit members judged him from the place his was raised. While you are in the army, it does not matter where you are from, all your job at the moment is to protect the great country they all live in; the great country of the United States of America. One meaning/theme is to never lose hope while in a hardship, Birdy never lost hope and pushed through all of his pain. Another theme, is where you come from does not matter, we are all human, the members of Birdy’s unit did not judge him from his becoming and did not care. Last, but not least, “the Army will change your look upon things,” this is because you have near death experiences and you realize what is really important in your life.
