Summer School Meeting

A few days back It was our end of summer meeting; I was sitting in a chair at the annual all staff meeting at the Old Colony YMCA. Our executive director talked about the tremendous progress we had made with our new construction, the amount of new members we had received, and the impact we’ve all made on the lives of others. Although this was a celebratory gathering, it was also a way for everyone to come together to express their thoughts and ideas on new ways to improve and continue growing in the community. Our executive brought up developmental aspects (assets) and the Achievement Gap, something we’ve been working at for quite some time. No matter how bad my day has been, I walk out of that office with a smile, I need to greet the kids with excitement. I keep in mind that the weekly swim lessons may be the only thing that kids can look forward to. Children need a people in their life to show them that they care for them, these kids need to feel as though they have a purpose. The kids want to know that I’m excited to see them and want to teach them. It is one of my jobs to teach the children self-confidence, to make them feel as though they do have a purpose in life. I hop in that water every day and I truly try my best to make every single child I see feel special. It is my goal to make each and every one smile. At the end of the class, I sit them upon the wall and I have them all tell me something they enjoyed in the day and something they didn’t enjoy. It is a way for me to enhance my lessons and learn who they are, by knowing what they like or dislike. I high five every child before they leave for that day, ensuring them they all did a fantastic job and I’ll be looking forward to see them all next week. Children who feel as though people care for them and respect them, tend to be more respectful in life, this is why I try my best to provide children with as many developmental assets
