The focus of the short story “Dancer” by Vickie Sears is the positive progression of the main character, Clarissa, a foster child who gains a sense of her cultural identity as a Native. In the beginning of the story, she is introduced as a child with next to nothing and is portrayed to have psychopathic traits. Towards the end of the story, there are positive changes in her character. The main factor that led to Clarissa’s progression was her developing a strong interest in the powwow that led her to gain a sense of being a part of a family, knowledge about the community, and a better understanding of her history and culture.…

On the 9th of November I went to the salsa jazz band concert. This all took place at Miami Dade College Kendall Campus in the Alfred L. McCarthy Hall Auditorium. I arrived at the campus around 7 pm, half an hour before the concert started and parked in the garage. At the garage, I met up with my friend Elizabeth with whom I have for the jazz and pop class. From there we both walked to the auditorium with her brother and waited outside for a bit. As I walked in the first thing that they did was give us the program. The program lists all the songs that were played and included all of the players in the jazz band. The director of the band’s name is Rafael Valencia. I noticed that it was pretty full, which to me meant that it was going to be good performances. My friend and I sat…

Although most scholars simply define it as the art of designing and arranging dance, American ballet icon George Balanchine distinguished dance choreography as “an expression of time and space, using the control of movement and gesture to communicate,” (Anderson 5). This definition puts emphasis on the rigid structure and body control required to successfully produce a piece of choreography, an idea not uncommon in the ballet community (Conoley-Paladino). Like Balanchine, modern dance icon Merce Cunningham defined dance choreography as “an art in space and time.” However, in contrast, he stated that “the object of the dancer is to obliterate” that art, drawing on the importance of…

As a surprise for my birthday during the hustle and bustle of the State Fair at Fair Park, I had the pleasure of seeing West Side Story presented by the Dallas Summer Musicals on October 11, 2011. West Side Story is a musical that takes place in New York City during the mid 1950s. An adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the musical shows the rivalry between two teenage street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. The Jets are a white working class group while the Sharks are from Puerto Rico. The lead male, Tony is a Jet and he falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo who is the leader of the Sharks. The story follows the obstacles that they must face in order to be together, and also how the two different cultures of the time clashed.…
