Summary: The Environment Of Childhood Poverty
An environment that either brims with abundance or lacks basic necessities, is a determinant as to whether a student learns effectively. According to Doctor Gary Evans in his article “The Environment of Childhood Poverty” the environment that surrounds a child is the single most affecting variable in childhood growth and development. Considering depression is highest in lower socioeconomic situations; there can be a strong correlation drawn between depression, poverty, and learning disability. This however, does not exclude the plight felt by a child in a situation that is more fortuitous in terms of economic wealth. Treatment for depression costs upwards of 300 dollars a month or more.(goodtherapy.org) This high monetary yield does not allow for those of lower economic wealth the opportunity to receive treatment. Proper care for depression is only easy to attain for those that uphold a high economic standing, despite them not usually needing the care as much as other folds of society. This directly disadvantages impoverished students who are held to the same standard despite the monetary difficulty. Monetary alleviation, is not the only benefit presented by this plan since the availability of free, educationally provided, therapy is an attractive quality that would interest affluent students in need as …show more content…
Hope, or the lack there of, is the main determinant for depression and characterizes that environment. Environmental health as the most important aspect of health since a good environment allows all other aspects of health to fall into place. The main issue is that equalizing the environment for everybody is an impossibility, and another issue entirely. Providing therapeutic for these individuals will aid in ways that allow for acceptance of the surrounding environment hence, bypassing this problem altogether. Students will receive a better chance of retaining the ability to come to terms with their situation and be able to succeed in spite of it given
