This reading is about environmental problems that human is facing in present society. The environmental problems that we are facing included natural habitats destruction, air and water pollution, overpopulation, species extinction, soil degradation, energy shortage, and chemical pollution. Diamond initiates this chapter using Singapore as a model state for ‘Asian Exceptionalism’ as it appears to be the best example of a successful non-democracy. Singapore has little corruption, is efficiently run, caters to the welfare of its citizens and has a highly educated population. Under this ‘façade’ is a pseudodemocracy, with Lee Kuan Yew running the state autocratically, portraying Singapore with prized image the government attempts to maintains on an international level. However, the Singaporean population is growing in education and income, causing an increase in demand for plurality and accountability, and the decrease of it being the ‘Asian Model’ it once was portrayed to be. Singapore’s authoritarianism is appealing because of the results it has brought onto the state such as political stability and affordable housing.…

The sustainability of our environment is crucial in saving the livelihood of the people and the planet. Since we are all interdependent, we will all have to do our part in sustaining our environment for the future. We should always be questioning and doing more about it rather than just talking or ignoring the facts. Most of us do not realize the excessive use of resources we have taken advantage of over the years. Generations past have exploited our planet which has resulted much to the endangered state it is in today. The resources on Earth are finite and they will become extinct whenever the maximum limits are reached. Moreover, not only are we using natural resources to benefit our own needs; after we use them, we often return them back to the earth under worse conditions, in turn progressively threatening the environment.…

There are many problems facing the world today; serious problems that could have grave consequences if not resolved within the next few years. However, there is one looming problem, which if not resolved, could make all other problems obsolete; the way that we take care of the environment, or rather the way we neglect it. The environment is a necessity for everyday life. Without the environment, we would die. How we chose to end global warming is interesting, because much of our daily uses affect the environment.…

First, we have global warming, which is a problem that must be solved as soon as possible. Some ignorant people think that it won’t happen but we are actually living this situation right now, every single day. According to some NASA studies, since 1950, the average temperature has climbed 1.4Fahrenheit degrees around the world. As a consequence of this fact, an Arctic ice area, which was bigger than the United States, has melted this year! Another evidence of global warning is that the frequency and number of hurricanes and earthquakes around the world has increased the last years. The irony of all this is that even though we do realize what is happening; even though we know that we are destroying our planet, we are still polluting, wasting and damaging.…

There are 1 billion children living in poverty (1 in 2 children in the world), 40 million live without adequate shelter, 400 million have no access to safe water. Every second 4 people die from hunger; around 27-28 percent of all children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight or stunted. Even though in 2008, according to UN, the majority of the world population is living in the urban, people are still suffering from poverty and hunger, even malnutrition. The poverty issue is getting more serious than ever, we have to do something to end it. To end poverty, environmental sustainability is the largest barrier, because everyone depends on natural resources for one’s live hood; basically all the natural resources are somehow vital. Lack of natural resources can also affect the sustainability of the country’s society. Climate change, in my opinion, is the most and critical issue. Pollution problem is one of the major environmental problems we have to face, because pollution will lead climate changes, for example, global warming. So if we are serious about preventing the world from climate change, we have to deal with the pollution issue all over the world first.…

While the underlying reasons of this environmental threat are considered, it can be stated that the major reasons are consuming natural resources unconsciously and wasting dangerous and chemical thrash through the natural environment where all life beings maintain their lives. Consuming the natural sources can be observed in different ways like water consumption, energy consumption, trees cut down, usage of hazardous chemical materials or many others. All these natural resources are not unlimited and unfortunately the natural environment cannot produce these sources as fast as people consume. Therefore, this consumption causes a considerable reduction on the natural resource like water, plants, trees or natural energy sources which are absolute must for not only humans but also other life beings. On the other hand, another reason that should be emphasized that majority of people are not aware of the wasting hazardous trash to environment. Most of the people do not deal with the consequences of their cars’ dangerous smoke or a growing number of factories throw out their wastes to oceans or near to residential areas. How many people concern about their own wastes? These can be seemed as simple example but the number…

People cut down trees and destroy the habitat of thousands of animals. As a result, many species are in danger of extinction. Factories pollute our rivers and lakes with dangerous chemicals. The increasing number of cars in towns and cities has led to the growth of harmful gases in the atmosphere. There is much litter everywhere, our parks and forests are full of rubbish.…
