Tim O'Brien's thematic focus for The Things They Carried is to explain to those not affected by war how war affects the direct and indirect people associated with it. The loss of innocence throughout this story is significant, in almost every chapter you see how war has changed these people and their families forever. You can see how Tim O'Brien's demeanor and personality changed throughout the story, showing that Tim O'Brien is losing his fun, outgoing, innocence. Tim did not want to go to war, he was just becoming an adult the last thing he needed thrown his way was going to war and being put in a life or death situation. Tim O'Brien explained how he felt when he killed someone for the first time, how O'Brien focused on every little detail
