18 January 2012 Have you ever lost someone so great or a hero you looked up to? I believe that this is what Ronald Koertge was seeing or experiencing when he wrote his poem, “Side Kicks.” Ronald has spent a lot of time both teaching and being taught. He received his BA from the University of Illinois and an MA from the University of Arizona. Robert has also taught at Pasadena City College (Website 1). Most of Ronald’s writing is about teens and young adults. “Side Kicks” is a poem about losing a hero or someone important. The poem, “Side Kicks” has many different meanings. When you read the poem the surface meaning gives an explanation of what a side kick is and does. It goes over the basics of a side kick. If you were to look at the deeper at the meaning of the poem, you would find something more. The poem talks about how a side kick isn’t given the gift of good looks. It also talks about sidekicks being brave and putting

The first symbol being the side kick, which symbolizes a child. The second is a hero, which symbolizes a parent. At the end of the poem it talks about how side kicks remind us of a part of ourselves that is like a child, never wanting to grow up and always wanting to look up to our hero’s (parents) for help and guidance. The poem also talks about how a side kicks’ outward appearance is not perfect like a hero’s, but they don’t care or get jealous of a hero because they look up to them for support or guidance. It talks about a side kick being sad because the best of ourselves (hero’s) lowered into the ground (funeral), tears pouring off that enormous nose (sad for the

An example of a symbol in this novel is a crane, on page 184. “I thought fleetingly of the first time id crossed the bridge at Hagi, I saw a drowned heron floating in the water, its grey and white feathers waterlogged, all its gracefulness crumpled and broken. The sight of it chilled me. I thought it a terrible omen.” I’m not quite sure of the full meaning of this paragraph but I think that it is trying to symbolise what is going to happen at the end of the book. It is saying that the heron is lord Shigeru and even though he is a graceful and respected man his time is going to come to an end, and that is why Takeo had a bad omen about…

Symbolism is used in this story. Such like the wind chimes, the jade peony and the cat. The most significant symbol in this story is the white cat, with its red eyes, that appears outside the house. This “cat” symbolizes that grandma’s time has come, and that she must move on to her next life where she will be reunited with “the juggler”. This cat bring backs memories and old feelings she had for her lover, and is therefore a significant symbol in this story. At the end of the story the cat revels that he is the symbol of grandma’s old lover. Grandma said that the cat’s eyes were pink, and the pink was also the color of her spirit. She thought the cat was sent by her old lover to take her back. The cat was also the symbol of death. After grandma saw the cat, she was already prepared to die and refused to go to the hospital, because she was a very traditional person, the cat was to bring her back, so there was no way to stop her from dying. The symbolism also shows that the tradition of grandma.…

The similes used also created a mysterious image of death. It referred death as a delicate bird, gardener and nurse that is the opposite of what people sees it. This is rather elusive and slippery which highlighted the relationship of human with death, which we all know what death is but no one could ever get a close look at it.…

    Role of Symbolism

In the poem, the purpose of symbolism is using an object or reference to describe a deeper meaning to a story. The poem " Music of Spheres" by displayes that how to use symbolism to describe an object with deeper meaning. This poem is written by Jean Follain who was a French author, poet and corporate lawyer. The reason why I selected this poem, is because Jean Follain only used a few sentences to reflect its deep symbolic meaning of this poem. Language makes us human. It helps us to understand our everyday experience and ideas. It will become more powerful by using symbolism instead of the customary language. In the written world, the role of symbolism in the poem is significant. It produces the same feeling as music. Music doesn't directly tell a story, but it creates a mood and images to the reader. Jean Follain in the poem," Music of Spheres" has effectively portrayed a lonely, absent minded man kick the cylinder on a frozen road, and it stops under a sky studded with stars. It describes the man's pathway from trauma and depression to hope and wonderful future. This is his poem below.…

In this story, there are multiple different symbols - all of which hold the ability to lead the readers into deep thoughts and realizations. This particular night he snuck away from his wife in the dead of night. All of this effort and sneaking could possibly suggest the father may have killed his son. Perhaps he knew he would not be able to feed another mouth and wished to take his son out of his misery. The father could have thought this action was justifiable; knowing first hand the hardships this child would have to endure and it was too much to bear for this father to bear. When he gets to the gravesite he digs painstakingly to five feet down into this baron tough ground to let only one foot of the post show above ground. In the poem the post was described as a “half-cross” this could symbolize his internal struggle between right and wrong, good and evil. In his mind, killing his son out of protection from this cruel world was a necessary evil. The amount of effort that the father put into this burial showed that he cared very much for his son. The father leaves off the engravings on…

    The Black Cat Symbolism

Throughout both Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories, The Tell Tale Heart and The Black Cat, he uses symbols. The symbols in both stories relate to each other and can also be compared and contrasted. The similar symbols such as the sound of the beating heart and the sound of the cat meowing are similar symbols, showing guilt and paranoia. Both their guilt and paranoia end up getting the best of them, as in the end, their guilt and paranoia get them caught for their killings. On the contrary, the sound of the heart beat was all in the narrator’s imagination while the sound of the cat’s meowing is real. Another pair of symbols that are similar is the old man and the cat. This pair of symbols represent the narrator’s misplaced anger and paranoia.…

Symbols are everywhere, embodying meanings larger than life. One can find symbolism in music, literature, and even in decoration! They play huge roles in specific themes or emotions in certain situations. In “Masque of the Red Death”, by Edgar Allan Poe, death is personified, terror reigns, and tragedy strikes, as he tells a short tale of the infamous “Black Plague” that reigned over Europe in the middle ages, and how death is absolutely inevitable. In the story, Poe used an intense amount of symbolism within the seven colored chambers to establish the mood of the story, the seven stages of life, and to emphasize the terror of the situation.…

Irony also contributes to the theme and shows the difference between life and death. Irony is found within the last line from the poem, “The garland briefer than a girl’s” (Housman 28). The word “garland” has two meanings in the phrase (Meyer 237). A “garland” can be laurels given to triumphant athletes or it can be a gathering of poetic verses, usually in tribute of someone’s life (Meyer 237). The irony between the meanings of the words, is that of life and death. The last line of the poems means that life withers away like a girls floral headwear, and death overtakes it (Meyer…

Lawson also includes the rhetorical device symbolism to connect and relate with the audiences perspectives. One of two examples of symbolism used in the poem are “we bow our heads and we brood and fret, because of the masks we wear” (line 2) which explains that the mask symbolizes how we hide behind pretend emotions to give off a look of joy when everything is no joyous. He also writes “while they break our hearts, oh, they kill our hearts! Do the things we must not tell” (line 4&8) which explains that the hearts symbolizes us being brought down and tampered with by our inner emotions of the secrets we…
