In Robert W Service’s “The Men That Don’t Fit In” the transition from third person perspective to first person narrative in the second stanza develops a more personal connection between the reader and the men who are the subject, allowing for a deeper understanding of the poem. “Could I find my proper grove, What a deep mark I would make!”(Service) In the beginning Service is describing the men; however a personal connection is not developed because the reader does not truly understand how the men are feeling, just the description that he gives.
