This episodes of cosmos was a very interesting one. Neil Degrasse starts off with what was suppose to be the means of diversity between humans and animals and he speaks on the topics of natural selection, genetic drift and more to explain why there are so many different breed of creatures and why some are preferred compared to others in certain types of environments. He introduced us to a tree that contained all of the creatures that have been discovered by man, and he tells us the similar physical features that are shared amongst ourselves and those creatures. The part that fascinated me the most is the one that spoke on the topic of the development of eyesight, he used the example of sea creatures to display the complexity of eyesight development.…

Science is defined as “knowledge about or study of the natural world based on facts learned through experiments and observation (1).” In other words, science is the study of the world through the manipulation of it. It is then no surprise that Science Fiction, better known as Sci-fi, is thoroughly driven by manipulation. This can be clearly witnessed through both film and literature. Manipulation is found in many aspects of such works.…

Science fiction is a form that deals principally with the impact of actual or imagined science upon society or individuals. If science concerns itself with discovery, then science fiction concerns itself with the consequences of discovery. It is a testament to the visionary nature of the form that science fiction writers predicted the advent of atomic weapons and sentient machines. It endures value though is in its capacity to ask probing questions of each new scientific advance, to conduct a dialogue with progress that decodes its real meaning and reveals it to us.…

In the episode of Star Trek, titled Space Seed by Gene Roddenberry, there are plenty of examples of science fiction. At the very start of this episode and almost every Star Trek episode you see the crew in a spaceship flying in space, called the starship enterprise. This is one example of science fiction because even though we have spaceships now, in Star trek they can somehow cancel out gravity so they don’t need to wear space suits like we do today. Also the starship is huge and has multiple levels. It is very futuristic, almost like a mall flying through space.…

“A Sound of Thunder” fits into the science fiction category because it’s based on time travel, dinosaurs ruling the Earth, and staying on the correct path so he doesn’t “change the course of history”. Those are all science related things so that’s the science part. It’s fiction because its fact but science related. No one can go back in time or change the course of history that’s where the fiction comes into play. In the story “nether grave” it’s harder to classify it as science fiction, because it’s not like it has something to do with time travel or dinosaurs, but it does have to do with gaming and leaving behind his own life to be a jaguar in a video game life. It does have to with people and how their life effects their life decisions which is science. It’s fiction because people can’t trade in their bad life to be in a video game.…

Fiction novels and short stories are some of the most interesting and exciting texts there could be. Since fiction does not necessary has to be realistic at all, the limit an author has for writing a story is as far as his/her creativity can take him/her. Therefore, science fiction has a big variation of stories that range from the unthinkable to the impossible and that is what allows authors to create great pieces of work. In the novels Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams, The Bicentennial Man, by Isaac Asimov and The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, readers can clearly see straight away that all of these novels are fiction just by simply reading the beginning of them. These three novels share common aspects of fiction while…

One of the main aspects of a science-fiction story is its setting. The time and place notifies the reader that the story is indeed a fantasy, and may have unordinary topics. The time of a science-fiction story can either be the past, present, or future. What makes fantasy novels unique is that it may take place in the very distant future without question. The location of the story may also be very distant, for example it may be in another galaxy. The place may also be far-fetched. In other words, the place of a science-fiction story can be a total fantasy. On the contrary, a fiction novel may take place on Earth, or in more specific terms, a specific country or city. The main setting could also have a characteristic of both a fantasyland, and a realistic place. The setting of a science-fiction story should be accompanied with corresponding characters.…
