Postman’s words from page 15 make the point that traditional language is the purest form of media. Words shape our culture and our views. Similarly, Carr claims that the printing press kickstarted a “domino” effect that has caused imaginative, rational, inventive and subversive ways of thinking to be put at risk. The two authors share the theme that as media has become based more on technology, the less meaning the content carries. The books raise the theme that we’re steadily becoming more like drones that take everything at face value as it’s presented to us.…

Chris Eyre manipulates this genre of popular film and is able to twist it in a way that allows the audience to see Native Americans as normal citizens, and not an outcast group. The next example is Victor and Thomas’s journey to retrieve Victor’s father’s ashes in Arizona. In this journey, Smoke Signals is able to cover a wide array of topics that are relatable to the film’s diverse audience. The road-trip is an iconic part of American life and media, and in that journey, Victor and Thomas were able to rekindle a long lost friendship and by the end of the film became close once again. For most of my life, the word “Native American” had immediately made me think of feathers, powwows, and a society uncorrupted by civilization. However, in watching the movie Smoke Signals, a movie that depicts the modern Native American culture, I learned many other things. For one, I learned that many of the customs that modern Native Americans have are very similar to my others. I also saw that the family life of the Native Americans in the film had many of the same problems that my family had undergone in the past years such as fighting and not telling along. This film was unlike any that I have ever seen.…
