Poetry arouses great emotions in people. How have four poems “aroused emotions” in you? What have you learnt about war and the emotions associated with it?…
Both swallowed in their job, the janitor in “Jorge the Church Janitor Finally Quits” by Martin Espada and the secretary in “The Secretary Chant” by Marge Piercy feel unappreciated and lost as employees. Jorge is “outside…of [Americans] understanding” and The Secretary is lost in her work and compares herself to objects such as her “hips are a desk.” The employees from these poems have become hidden behind their duties and are slowly sinking into the unknown.…
In this poem the speaker is a woman. The majority of the poem she talks about what it means to be a woman in her day and age, how it limits her speech, and allows people to make unfair conclusions about her. As far as she is concerned, her critics can't even begin to look past the fact that she's a woman, or imagine that a woman could do something other than work in the kitchen.…
Feminist Literature Draft In many instances, the works of feminist literature use characters to examine and address the issues in the way society treats women. The poems “Daystar” by Rita Dove and “The Secretary Chant” by Marge Piercy do that by focusing on the female identity, more specifically the lack of it their characters are experiencing. By introducing readers to the attitude of the female characters toward their situation, the poems portray daily life from a new perspective that challenged the society’s image of that time.…
‘’On the sacred branch of my only voice/ -I insist./ Insist for us all,/ which is the job/ of the voice, and especially/ of the poet.Else what am I for, what use am I for, what use am I if I don’t insist?’’ This was the very crucial question raised in the poem, Refusing Silence by Tess Gallagher. In her poem, Tess Gallagher creates a momento revolving around not only what poets do,but what they should do if they don’t create poems. In doing this however, she writes her poem in a lyric style, while conveying repetition, hyperboles, and rhythms to aid in creating the poem.…
Audre Lorde: a black lesbian feminist socialist; uses poetry to address issues of “difference” such as sexism, ageism, and racism; aims to encourage oppressed members of society to stretch out and bridge the gap between the actualities of our lives and the consciousness of our oppressor…
*This poem seems to address the oppression of women and/or how women are viewed in society. Past and present. Works such as “Color Purple” relate to same subject matter.…
Take a minute to imagine “Men looking like they had been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals,” “never/ ending blasted field of corpses,” and “throats half gone, /eyes bleeding, raw meat heaped/ in piles.” These are the vividly, grotesque images Edward Mayes describes to readers in his poem, “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976.” Before even reading the poem, the title gave me a preconceived idea of what the poem might be about. “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976” describes what an extreme version of what I expected the poem to be about. The images I described above are just some of the horrifying scenes described by Mayes. This poem spoke to me about the pain and suffering patients endure while staying in a hospital (whether it be a mental hospital or a medical hospital) and the horrific images the staff see daily. Mayes uses several types of imagery and literary tropes in his poem to give readers an intense visual sensation as they read his poem. The visuals Mayes placed in my own mind while I read this poem were intensely real and stuck with me long after I studied the poem.…

By many, poetry is looked upon as being a language of its own. It’s a way of creatively expressing unique emotions, thoughts, and beliefs with the use of many literary devices. American poetry has been the most important form of writing throughout history. Many famous authors, such as Lucille Clifton, used poetry to document the most major times in history in which they lived, such as the Feminist Movement in the 1960s. During this time, women experienced a significant amount of gender discrimination and harassment, which inspired Lucille Clifton to incorporporate metaphors, similes, and symbolism in many of her poems to raise awareness about the power of women.…
The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…
Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.…
Although fiction has several underlying themes, poetry does as well. Poetry’s theme might even be a quite a bit more challenging according to the length of the literary work compared to that of a work of fiction. The theme is rarely pointed out. It is up to the reader to find the theme. Likewise Fiction, themes in poetry can also vary from each individual. The theme of woman and their roles in life throughout history have had a huge impact on literature. There are so many works that represent woman, whether it be positive or even negative. Furthermore, two extraordinary poems share a very powerful theme. In “Homage to My Hips” by Lucille Clifton and “Her Kind” by Anne Sexton, the theme of the oppression of women is apparent in both unique yet similar poems. Clifton and Sexton both have their woman mention what is expected of the typical woman in their societies. However, they both find their identities after all.…
The text that I will be analyzing is a poem by Lorna Crozier called The Child Who Walks Backwards. Throughout my analysis I will look into parental abuse, underlying meanings in the lines in the poetry, as well as connections I can make personally to the book. I think it is also important that I bring forth essential messages in the words and statements of the poem. The main theme I will choose to focus on is that abuse does not only happen at school or back alleys, but that it happens in homes as well.…
