Summary Of Once By Morris Gleitzman
The 150 page book ‘Once’ was written by Morris Gleitzman and published by the Penguin group in 2005. It was set in 1942 in the German mountains at the time of the second World War.

Summary
A ten year old boy named Felix is living in an orphanage in Poland in 1942. Felix finds a carrot in his soup and thinks it is a sign that his parents are coming back to get him. The Nazis come to the orphanage to burn the books in the library. Mother Minka tells Felix that Sister Elwira put the carrot in his soup out of sympathy for him and that his parents are not coming to get him. Felix decides to leave the orphanage. He wants to hide the books in his parents bookshop so that the Nazis don’t burn them.

Felix reaches a house and he finds there are two dead bodies outside, surrounded by dead chickens. At the house he meets a six year old girl named Zelda and she goes on the journey with her. On their way to the city they meet a group of exhausted looking men, women and children wearing the Jewish star. The groups are accompanied by Nazi soldiers and the soldiers make Felix and Zelda join the group. As Felix and Zelda walk with the group, Felix spends six hours telling Zelda stories.

    The novel begins in 1941 with a twelve year old boy named Eliezer as the narrator. He begins the story by introduces the reader to Moche the Beadle. He was a man of all work at a synagogue. They were Jews of Sighet in a little town in Transylvania. Moche the Beadle was a poor man but nobody ever felt embarrassed by him or his presence. Mocha was very awkward physically but he always made people smile. Eliezer got to know him toward the end of the year when he studied in the Talmud, and when he ran to the synagogue to weep over the destruction of the Temple. There was a war going on but Eliezer and the people where he lived were not aware of how serious it was. Though the Hungarian police made their appearances, as the weeks went by life always returned to normal and there wasn’t much thought about it. One day when Eliezer was heading to the synagogue he saw Mocha the Beadle. He told his story of his friends that had been taken charge by the Gestapo. Eliezer learned how Mocha escaped this mass murder but things had changed since Mocha started sharing these stories he so desperately wanted people to believe. Although Eliezer did not particularly believe his stories he still would sit with him in the evenings to try and understand his grief, although alls he felt was pity for him.     The story begins in the summer of 1935 in Warsaw, Poland, where we are introduced to a young couple, Antonina and Jan Zabinski. They lived happily until her brother Zachary was beaten by Polish boys for being Jewish. Later on while waiting for her father at the candy store she overheard two men talking about the Germans plans to take over the other countries. Then the Russians came into her town and bought all of their goods, controlled the school system, and etc. When the Russians offered the people to go to a Russian school in Leningrad Alicia’s brother Moshe took the opportunity and went to school there.
