Traveling around the world is repeatedly viewed as expensive and luxurious. Therefore, only those who are rich can experience it. Of course traveling has become a social norm as millennials discover the benefits of it. In Amanda Machado’s “How Millennials Are Changing Travel” article, she conveys that Millennials are expanding their vacations and escaping their comfort zone. Furthermore, in Derrick Fung’s “How Millennials Are Changing Travel”, article he asserts that Millennials thrive for experiences and are influenced by social media to travel. And how the travel industry is booming due to it. Both articles persuade Millennials to travel and seek adventure despite the hardship with the economy.…
Being a millennial baby, I think that the election of President Barack Obama has had the greatest impact on the millennial generation, when he was inaugurated on January 20, 2009; everyone knew that everything would change. With President Obama being the first African America President, it gave some people a dosage of confidence, so to speak. I remember my father telling me that President Obama was elected. Even then, I thought to myself, I could do anything I wanted and be anything I wanted. That wasn’t quite the case because of one little problem: racism. Racism has been there ever since I can remember, just because of someone’s skin tone. Even at my school, I feel different because I am the only Indian in my class. The majority are Caucasians.…
From a neutral perspective, the author possesses a definitive purpose but elicits wild generalizations upon the entire millennial generation, ultimately detracting authenticity and credibility as the author’s voice leaks into the article. Tyler is clearly well-versed in the subject and openly expresses her opinions as fact throughout her work; she smartly refrains from speaking in the first person, but with the inclusion of her opinions, she might as well use “I” in every argument. She begins the article with the inclusion that millennials have underdeveloped brains, are hopelessly reliant upon technology, and possess a cloud of over-attached parents. She assumes that this particular generation will wreak negative impacts on the workforce as she braces employers for the impending intrusion. For example, she opens her argument with youths’ inferiority. “Older generations that couldn’t wait to proclaim their independence can’t comprehend this generation’s need for parental guidance and influence” . The choice of small rhetorical choices ultimately guides the reader…
The past three decades in the world have seen the number of young people with obesity increase by nearly a triple. This is according to reports from the National Center for Health Statistics (Eisenberg, Radunovich, & Brennan, 2013). Obesity is rarely caused by genetic or hormonal defects, and the main reason for the high occurrence of obesity, therefore, is the high intake of calories than an individual can burn. As much as the major reasons for the overall increase in the number of overweight and obese adolescents is not known, the most common theory is that the society has become more successful. This implies that adolescents…
As a GenMe’er it is truly amazing to witness the profound complexity of an exponentially growing society. Across the entire spectrum of humanity, generation after generation we are becoming more educated and technologically more advanced than ever. Despite our achievements, I personally have experienced this vulnerable self-esteem that you talk about in your book, Generation Me. I write to you because I am taking a class, Rhetorical Writing Strategies 305, and the teacher is requiring us to do so. The professor’s name is John Vanderpot; remember him? Yes, he is quite the brilliant fellow. In all honesty, I wasn’t enthralled about taking his class, but after being required to read great literary works, such as yours, I have reconsidered the possibility of what reading can do for the GenMe. According to you, GenMe’ers are simply not happy, and I agree that our schools, parents, youth sports have cultivated a vulnerable self-esteem that is inevitably problematic. I’d like to talk about a particular cohort…
Danny Glover stated that literacy’s standards were changing. He said, “If we talk about literacy, we have to talk about how to enhance our children’s mastery over the tools needed to live intelligent, creative, and involved lives.” Literature has impacted the world greatly. From the time of the Enlightenment to modern times, literature was (and still is) one of the most prominent forms of media. With the changing expectations throughout history, literature has been impacted by the majority of its readers: the youth. Likewise, the youth has been affected by literature’s everlasting and significant words and meanings. The American youth and literature have shaped each other throughout history through the effects of ever-changing definitions…
What is American Identity to Millennials? What is American identity to anyone? These are difficult questions to answer. And since they are so hard to answer, you can ever answer them correctly. Thus you can not answer them. It is because America is so great that its people can not be defined by one thing. Because even the greatest heroes and the worst villains are still American if they live in America. Because we are Americans we don't have a standard we can love the government. Or hate the government, We could even love or hate America but since we live in American, disagreeing is just exercising our right to freedom of speech.…
She describes today’s children by their love for “selfies and Snapchat” (Adrienne 1). This is the first sentence in the article and it tells the reader right away that the article was about today’s children and how they are judged based on their attachment to their technological gadgets. Also she puts the article in the context of other things that are perceived to be different between the millennials and the older generation. One such idea that was addressed is relationship that the two generations have with the libraries. Unlike other notions that she debunked in the other areas of the article, she gives data to prove that less millenials are visiting the library compared to the older generations of Americans. However, she goes on to give an explanation. The article quotes the study’s finding that the modern Americans are “buying more books that they are borrowing” (Adrianne, 2). The quote thus gives a context whereby we understand why there is perception that the millenials are not reading: they are reading just not in the way the older guys did it, in public areas. Thus, we see Adrienne make good use of Kairos in her article, using them to give the reader the context of her…
Mental health is a concept widely explored throughout canonical literature with the range of texts exploring such issues being remarkably diverse. In contemporary literature, a number of works have incorporated mental illness as a primary theme. Two texts that do so are ‘The Bell Jar’ and ‘Girl, Interrupted’. The former is a semi-autobiographical novel authored by Sylvia Plath and recited from the perspective of the protagonist, Esther Greenwood. 18-year-old Esther battles with depression as she seeks to escape the shackles of societal stigma. The latter is the memoir of depressed and directionless teenager,…
Generation Y or Millennials are the new generation that will direct America's future. They are the about 75 million in size and are the second largest group in the workforce (Smith & Clark, 2010, p 1). As they age, they will be the ones that work and develop America into their own ideology. Previous generations had their own contribution to America, but Millennials present a new kind of generation. They are the most racially and ethnically diverse generation: White Americans make up about 69% whereas previous generation were composted of 70% or more White America (Pew Research Center, 2010, p 1). They generally have similar values, but "may differ in their behaviors around those values" (Smith & Clark, 2010, p 1). Millennials are the most like to be more understanding and accepting of immigrants because of their race composition and the diverse world.…
In the twenty first century, people are classified into various categories. Two of the categories are, the Boomers and the Millennials. Boomers are the group of people born during the Baby Boom, which occurred from the mid 1940s to the early 1960s. In the 1950s, the United States experienced a marked economic growth with an increase in manufacturing and home construction. In this decade America had recovered from the Great Depression due to the rise in industry during World War II. People who lived in the cities moved to the suburbs and lived in independent houses. There were more white collar jobs than blue collar jobs during this period. There was also an increase in the overall birth rate of the country, hence, the people born during this period of prosperity were…
Even though Non-Traditional, they are conservative because they save money and Work hard. Millennials have been portrayed as young men and women that are destroying tradition. When they have been making their own personal tradition that suit them. Tradition is something people should enjoy and feel like it fits them and not something forced on them. I am going to prove these myths about millennials wrong like Henry Jenkins did with his video game myths. Jessye McGarry made an article about 11 things millennials are destroying and this essay will prove his ideas wrong.…
William Strauss and Neil Howle believed that each generation has a set of characteristics. The standards of our time should reflect the characteristics of the coming of age generation. The millennials have more education, racially diverse and are entering adulthood during a recession. Most are liberal, support abortion laws, marriage equality and are agnostic. However the key events chosen portray higher value than other situations and all are situated in the time of their own generation. Each of these historical development have been successful in building some sort of process, either positive or negative, that have impacted the current areas of knowledge. The question asks if certain events in time that have, in a way, impacted the areas…
The Mark Zuckerberg written for the screen by Aaron Sorkin has a line in David Fincher’s The Social Network (2010) that simplifies the pursuits of Millennials to a single sentence. When asked why he feels that he must join one of Harvard’s revered final clubs, Zuckerberg replies, “Because they’re exclusive. And fun and they lead to a better life.” Appropriately, his eventual foundation of Facebook brings whole new meanings to exclusivity, fun, and future prospects. The Social Network is a filmic re-telling of how the “youngest billionaire of all time” came to prominence and took helm over the Millennial generation’s advancement by creating the world’s most popular internet destination. What better website could have been developed for a generation that places self-image, success, and recognition at the highest levels of importance? Furthermore, it is a generation that seeks to acquire those three traits with near-impossible immediacy.…
Generation Y refers to those born between the 1980 and 2000. This generation is commonly known as the confident type of people. Furthermore, they were born alongside the rise of technology and are more likely to be IT-savvy than their parents and teachers. However, HR Managers do face a difficult challenge handling this generation. Managers have a challenge trying to train and motivate them to work. By doing so, they want to get the best out of these employees in order to benefit the company. It is important for the managers to understand these new employees. As most of the people in this generation only recently started working, there is no single effective way to manage them.…
