Keep Calm and Doodle On
In the article “Keep Calm and Doodle On”, by Charlotte Hughes and Scott Asakawa, it talks about how doodling in class can be a good thing which is something as a society has deemed as a distraction from learning. The researchers found a study that was conducted in 2009 by Jackie Andrade, a psychology professor at the University of Plymouth. In her experiment she had two groups listen to the same “mundane” phone message, one group was instructed to doodle while the message played and the other group was just asked to listen to the message. The group that was asked to doodle remembered 29% more than the group that didn’t, the study isn’t conclusive but it has the potential to explain how the practice might actually help in a school setting. In the experiment, three Australian Universities participated in a joint study, the schools encouraged the students taking science courses to draw or “doodle” what they were being taught for that day. The researchers found that the students that drew retained more information than the students that didn’t, they also found the class more enjoyable and were engaged more when they doodled their notes. Other experiments they mention do not hold similar findings though, one study conducted by Elaine Chan from the University of British Columbia found that for recalling visuals is when doodling seemed to have a negative effect. The authors of this article put a link to a small clip of a TED talk with Sunni Brown, in her TED talk she defended the idea that doodling helps people recall information and states that doodling is the brain’s way to not lose focus on the learning
