The description of Just Lather, That’s All by Hernan do Tellez makes the setting more believable. The author is able to use descriptive language too effectively to describe the weather, the auditory and the imagery sense. Tellez used auditory imagery to express the thought of the barber. As the barber went back and forth contemplating weather to kill Captain Torres, the barber thought, “I could cut his throat just so- zip, zip” (Tellez 50).…

In “Just Lather, That’s All” by Hernado Tellez, the barber, the protagonist of the story, is faced with a dilemma when he must determine whether it is right or wrong to commit murder. With his “destiny depend[ing] on the edge of [his] blade,” Tellez suppresses the barber’s final decision from the reader until the end of the story, in order hold their attention. Additionally, the indeterminate ending prevents the plot’s intrigue from dissolving by leaving much to the reader’s interpretation. There is no closure to the situation; because of the barber’s final decision, the captain’s exit from the barbershop arouses as many questions for the reader as does his arrival at the beginning of the story. This generates additional fear for the barber…

In the story, “Just Lather, That’s All” by Hernando Tellez, the barber would have been a coward had he killed Captain Torres because, when he killed the captain he was unarmed. Secondly, he would have to flee leaving all he had behind. Lastly, he would have been vulnerable. The barber was weak and afraid of killing captain Torres and to be called as the murderer of the captain. The barber would have been a coward because; he killed the captain when he was unarmed. As soon as the captain entered, “he took off his bullet – studded belt that his gun holster dangled from. He hung it up on a wall hook and placed his military cap over it” (48). The barber knew that the captain was unarmed and as per his…

The real meaning of “Haircut” by Ring Lardner, is to conveyed and understand the situation in the small town by the barber. The barber is insensitive and imperceptive, His recounting of the crude jokes told in his barbershop, and his appreciation of those jokes shows his insensitivity. He speaks of Jim as being the life of the town who is sorely missed rather than as the sadistic, violent, and insensitive bully he really was. Jim Kendall, the main character, is portrayed in a sympathetic light as simply a prankster who was a bit rough. But Jim was, in fact, cruel, a deadbeat, a drunkard, and a womanizer.…

    Lather or Blood

“Just Lather, That’s All” tends to set confliction in the minds of its readers. “The day he ordered the whole town to file into the patio of the school to see the four rebels hanging there, I came face to face with him for an instance. But the sight of the mutilated bodies kept me from noticing the face of the man who had directed it all, the face I was about to take into my hands,” said the barber. This quote shows the barber’s realization and emotion over the situation. “On the other hand I, with his razor in my hands, stroking and restroking his skin, trying to keep blood from oozing from these pores, can’t even think clearly. Curse him for coming, because I’m a revolutionary and not a murderer. And how easy it would be to kill him. And he deserves it. Does he? No! No one deserves to have someone else make the sacrifice of becoming a murderer. What do you gain by it? Nothing,” he thinks. This shows precisely the confliction and confusion of the barber’s emotions on the subject of murder.…

“Just lather that's all” has strong ties towards the world past and current. My topic for critical connections assignment is “Are morals more important than what is best?”. This theme in just lather that's all can be seen in WWII when American and British armies would choose whether they would bomb German concentration camps and the trains leading to them. As this would stop Germans from killing them by concentration camps and give a chance for prisoners to escape and stop delivery of prisoners to the camp but killing countless victims in the process in the camp or on the tracks. It ties with Just Lather, That's All if the barber killed the officer there would be fewer executions and fewer deaths of prisoners but he decides not to because it is a sin in his religion.…

The Barber in “Just Lather, That’s All” should have killed the general when he had the chance, and become the martyr the town desperately needed. Sitting in the chair, The Barber “never had him so close” (Yates 1). The opportunity to have someone so deplorable and universally hated by the village within his grasp presented an opportunity that was extremely rare, and demanded a swift, direct response. The Barber was a rebel, and here was his chance to support the rebellion and free his people from the grasp of the tyrant killing those who only yearned for freedom. It did not even matter that the General knew the Barber was a rebel, the cocky attitude is one other reason the General deserved to die. The joy escaping…

This Film is n Zoot Suit, was produced by Luis Valdez. The film is in a theatrical style and is based on a story involving the real-life events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial. This event took place when a group of young Mexican-Americans were wrongfully charged with murder. In the play, Henry Reyna is played by Luis Valdez’ brother, Daniel Valdez and he does a great job creating parallels to the inspired role of Hank Leyvas. Reyna is a pachuco, who was unfairly prosecuted, and then thrown in jail along with his gang for a murder they did not commit. The play is set in the barrios of Los Angeles in the early 1940s against the backdrop of the Zoot Suit Riots and World War II. As in the play, Edward James Olmos portrays El Pachuco, an idealized Zoot Suiter, who functions as narrator throughout the story and serves as Henry's conscience. The film is very effective in showing when Henry jumps in and out of his mind. Over all the film as a main message that is that there are many pachucos at the time but not all have to end up in jail or dead (like the real situation with Hank Leyvas). This is shown at the end as we see that Henry’s brother joins the military and does well for himself. The reason that this film was such a great success in my eyes is that it was in a form of a play and that the audience was actually brought in and somewhat engaged. I felt as the narrator spoke to me. And in a sense the narrator spoke to the idea that there are many outcomes to a single event or happening. He spoke to the idea that if one reflects on certain turning points in their lives, if they would to do something different, life would have been different overall.…
