Summary Of How To Be American
In unit three we were able to see how certain educational leaders believed students should learn and what they should be learning while in school. For the first educational approach Freire’s problem posing method engages students to be independent thinkers while pushing them to collaborate with each other to solve problems. In Eric liu’s How to be American, she talks about the information American students should know and applying that knowledge and this is where the second educational approach can be seen. With the third education approach Hirsch explains in the article that being cultural literacy is having a certain amount of knowledge so one is able to exercise active citizenship. Liu is an activist of being culturally literate and this can be seen in the first paragraph where he points out when legislators and educators in Arizona and Texas propose banning ethnic studies in public schools and assign textbooks emphasizing the slave trade.”(Liu para 1) He believes that teaching the next generation to more culturally diverse will create citizens who won't make the same mistake as the past and also better America as a whole. Liu talks about people being more connected through applying the existing knowledge learned to new situations. An explain of this in the article is when Liu states that “Now anytime a reference we’ve discussed comes up in the news or on TV or in a dinner conversation, she claims ownership.”(Liu para 29) She is applying her knowledge to new situations. This also allows she to have a better understanding when applying that knowledge. In the The World Is as Big or as Small as You Make It video they talk about reusing the knowledge of the technology to be able to become more culturally literate. Saanni Crespina- Flores founder of, Do Remember Me program said “I look at it as retooling what they already have which would be their cell phones their ipods their ipads.” They did a project where they would send videos or make video calls to students from other countries just to see how they live and ask questions about each other's cultures. They had never done anything like this before and they had to use their knowledge other culture to create questions to have a successful

    Although some americans take for granted the oppertunities at hand, there have been several historical figures that know the true meaning of being apart of the United States. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, former president of the united states, said, "My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man."     All Americans are guaranteed equal justice. They are allowed equal justice because America is a free country. Americans are inclined to freedom and with that freedom, have the ability to create infinite opportunities for themselves, which then allow them to find success, happiness, and prosperity. Americans can find these opportunities because they live in a meritocracy, and are provided with rights and freedoms that come from The Constitution of the United States of America.
