This interview, focuses on Dwayne Lowery who started off as a line worker in a factory and became a field representive in a major employee union. During his transition, he had to learn new ways of being literate especially since in his younger years as a high school student he didn’t read as much because of parental influence on what was available to read in the house. However, when Lowery got a grant to take time off work and travel to Washington D.C. to attend a union training activity. Once he came back he was offered a full-time job at the union and eventually noticed that the people who he was negotiating with often lacked the mannerisms and academic level. Lowery can accredit his new lease on the literacy world to the “educational networks the unions established during the first half of the twentieth century”. Now sponsors in literacy whether it’s a person, a thing, or an event all impact in two different but powerful ways. They either “help to organize and administer stratified systems if opportunity and access” or they “hinder literacy activity, often forcing the formation of new literacy requirements while decertifying older…
Reading was slowly taken out of school curriculum and was no longer necessary as people were dependent on technology to do everything for them. Even though illiteracy is common throughout the novel, American literacy rates were up to 99% and still are for both males and females in the decade before its publication (Central Intelligence Agency). In this government controlled dystopia, reading first became obsolete and then eventually became a crime. Sopor prevented people from learning how to read or comprehend numbers, because of the effects it has on the human mind. On the contrary, during the 1970’s literacy rates were higher than ever before.…
There are many issues that America faces today, but is the decline in reading one of them? This is a question that only you can decide for yourself. If you thought that the decrease in young adults reading is not a problem could you be persuaded? Dana Gioia states that there will be many negative effects in the United States from lack of literature. Some might find that his argument is very effective in persuading your ideas.…

My favorite fictional character would have to be Sherlock Holmes. I like him because he has awesome deductive reasoning skills. I relate his skills pretty much to my daily activities. I actually think that we do have to use deductive reasoning in our daily lives even only for a tiny amount. Even for the simplest things, we have to use our logic and analyze whether whatever we’re about to do is right and consider what the outcome is going to be. It always excites me whenever he finds new clues and starting to put the pieces together leading to the big picture. He is a page-turner! He adds suspense and excitement to the story and never fails to amaze me.…
I have been working at Lawnwood Elementary school for three years and believed that we had a tremendous literacy program. I acknowledged this because of the classes that I would push in and provide inclusion services to, and the school grade earned every year was an “A”. I was never intricately involved in the planning of the literacy programs and I provided support services to the lowest 30% as directed by my supervisor. I always just assumed the literacy aspect at my school was commissioned by a committee whom delivered the curricula to the teachers, who then implemented it with the students. I was not too involved in the particulars of the cultures or challenges that our students endured on a daily basis. I just assumed that if they were low readers then they would receive services. I never factored culture; I just kept it simple and shallow.…

According to Wikipedia.com, Dreams can be identified as “successions of images, emotions, and sensations that occur involuntarily in the mind during stages of sleep. The notion of dreams foreshadows the underlying concept of the play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by Shakespeare. In the play, the purpose of dreams can be identified, the relationship between dreams and sleep can be explained, and the effects of these dreams on the characters and the audience can be seen.…

Literature we learn in schools mostly represents events of real life. Sometimes the speaker, the author, and the writer can exaggerate but they frequently present their work based on real life occurrences. Literature cannot ever be “an annoying obstacle” instead it should be seen as an enjoyable master piece. Furthermore, literature should be considered as an important tool for all those who are aiming to become a successful professional in any field. Personally, from the Literature classes, I have learned that people do not need to reach a consensus, and that everyone’s point of view count.…
Reading and writing is essential to our lives; we read and write every day in at least one way, shape, or form. Just about any educated person can read and write, but reading and writing on a scholarly or literary level demands a higher level of knowledge and understanding. There are a wide variety of aspects of literature to take into account when writing literature. Some aspects are familiar to most people: theme, setting, and characterization, among others. Meanwhile, there are certain aspects of literature that require a higher level of understanding such as style, tone, atmosphere, and figurative language. Every writer has a different method of writing, but for the most part, writers use a general structure when composing a new piece of literature. Each type of literary piece (narratives, poems, essays, speeches) has a different structure due to different reasons - each category of literature has one or more ways to shape and form the writing, but it depends on the overall purpose and type of publication. Critically thinking about literary writing is less tricky than it sounds. Critical thinking merely requires deep thought and examination. Challenging assumptions and observing different perspectives is the most important part of literary critical thinking.…
Literature does not simply add to reality, but describes it. Matthew Arnold’s statement about literature being a “criticism of life” is right because literature teaches it talks about problems that the world faces daily, good moral lessons through criticism, and it shows the author commentary on things. Literature is used to express people’s feelings and thoughts. In some literature, it can be used to show what authors critique in this world, being either good or bad.…
