What Lies Beneath
The ripe globe of the autumnal sun climbed into the cloud streaked depths of the sky. Paul sat and drank his tea. When he had done that, he laid back and let the warmth of it sink into him. Sharp edged shadows stalked across the distant slopes and valleys as the sun began to rise higher. The light was bright but unnatural, thin and brittle, like before a storm. Paul was watching a hawk spiral overhead on the morning's first thermals when a furtive movement from below snatched his attention. He lowered his gaze to where a grove of stunted bushes below rustled and move jerkily against the wind. Paul froze and watched the undergrowth for any further sign. Perhaps it was just

I am sworn to help such men as yourself.” he reassured the peasant, whose dirt besmeared features split into a lopsided grin of relief. “How far is this village of yours?”

The inn was packed. Even with the tables stacked against the walls, there hardly seemed room to breathe. Paul considered slipping back outside, but somehow the tension of hope and fear that permeated the room kept him still. That and the presence of Sir Marcus, of course. The knight looked as calm and serene as always as he chatted to those around him about their crops, their children, the first signs of the season.
Paul saw the awe that washed over their faces. With an action that he would have denied even under torture, he straightened his back and smiled with pride. Sir Marcus was, after all, his knight. Not until Francis, the village elder, made his entrance, did the activity in the room come to some sort of order. He had hooked one of his claw-like hands onto the shoulder of one of the village boys. Favoring Sir Marcus with what could have been interpreted as a half-bow, he studied his guest’s features with sunken yellow eyes. Knight and elder faced each other, surrounded by a ring of villagers, and smiled. “I thank you for coming to our aid,” Francis began. “I only wish I could tell you what we need aid

As an enormous wall of gray clouds approaches, the anticipation grows ever so slightly with each passing moment. This warm sun-filled afternoon slowly begins its descent into a cool breezy evening as the rain commences. A few tiny droplets fall from the dark canopy above onto the carpet of green blades beneath my feet. Across the wavy pasture the verdant pine trees at the woods' edge come alive as they sway back and forth like stalks of wheat from some lonely field in rural Nebraska. A thin layer of fog slowly begins to form just above the warm ground as the steady downpour continues.…

    Greek and Roman Literature

Many works in the earliest days of Greek and Roman literature focused primarily on the military aspect of life. Through battles, vivid descriptions of armor and other battle utilities, and specific actions regarding wartime affairs, timeless authors were able to characterize their heroes, as well as enhance the plotline. Two of the great works of all time, Homer’s The Iliad and Virgil’s The Aeneid, are no exception, as both tales used detailed descriptions of shields and battle actions to both characterize the heroes and to further develop the story. Virgil, 800 years after Homer had written his greatest works, clearly chooses to model The Aeneid off of him. While Homer chose to focus his works primarily on warfare as it pertains to traditional warrior code, Virgil decided to focus on how war created the vast empire that is Rome, a much more political stance. Virgil literally took a character from Homer, and using methods such as the description of the main character’s shield, and allowing deception to play a key role in significant events, he tells his own story in a very similar way. Given how influential and significant warfare was during the time of both the Greeks and the Romans, it only seemed fitting that military technology played such a large role in the meaning behind each story.…

For a space they scanned the great expanse below them with eager eyes. It spread remoter and remoter, with only a few clusters of sere thorn bushes here and there, and the dim suggestions of some now waterless ravine, to break its desolation of yellow grass. Its purple distances melted at last into the bluish slopes of the further hills-- hills it might be of a greener kind--and above them invisibly supported, and seeming indeed to hang in the blue, were the snowclad summits of mountains that grew larger and bolder to the north-westward as the sides of the valley drew together. And westward the valley opened until a distant darkness under the sky told where the forests began. But the three men looked neither east nor west, but only steadfastly across the valley.…

The sunless sky covered the woods over the treetops which created a canopy over my head. The crimson and auburn foliage was a magnificent sight, as this was the season known as Fall. There was a gentle breeze, creating the single sound of rustling leaves. The leaves appeared as though they were dying to fall out of the tree and join their companions on the forest floor. Together with pine needles and other flora the leaves formed a thick springy carpet for me to walk upon.…

I could see the heat waves rising off the pavement on the road ahead as the traffic began to thin out. Not letting the heat of a Texas summer ruin my trip, I turned up the air conditioner. I could not help but smile as I felt the frosty air as it blew my hair back. I continued to head east on the highway. The dark green of the pine trees loomed over the road and seemed to go on forever. The smells of fresh pine filled the car and nearly overpowered my senses. Just outside the pine forest I noticed graceful as they grazed near the road. They briefly looked up and I saw the peace…

The season cast an orange haze above the horizon, lighting up the sky as if lit by fire, yet the haze was so crisp and clear. The sun, like a large, grandeur orange fireball in the distance was partially cloaked by the hanging clouds, which were all splashed with the random colors of hot pinks, reds and even hints of purples and blues. The sun was so large that he felt he could almost touch it. It seemed to look at him with a dull glare, knowing that its beauty and the planet’s dependence on it for survival made up for it. The sun which had its time to shine for the time it was given seemed to whisper, “farewell” to the world as it sunk lower and lower in a lazy manner; almost as if it never wanted to leave.…

    Morning in Nagrebcan

It was sunrise at Nagrebcan. The fine, bluish mist, low over the tobacco fields, was lifting and thinning moment by moment. A ragged strip of mist, pulled away by the morning breeze, had caught on the clumps of bamboo along the banks of the stream that flowed to one side of the barrio. Before long the sun would top the Katayaghan hills, but as yet no people were around. In the grey shadow of the hills, the barrio was gradually awaking. Roosters crowed and strutted on the ground while hens hesitated on theri perches among the branches of the camanchile trees. Stray goats nibbled the weeds on the sides of the road, and the bull carabaos tugged restively against their stakes.…

He sat in the same room, day in, day out, staring at exactly the same section of wall in front of him; staring, but seeing something besides the brick and mortar that the others saw. He always wore a slightly bemused smile upon his ageless face, a smile that did not belong in this world of shifting eyes and sharp, thin mouths. The other villagers were jealous of his apparent bliss. ‘What does he have to be so happy about; he lives in the same ugly world as us, don’t he? Why’s he think he’s so special, being happy about nothing?’. These were the questions the other villagers asked of themselves, but no matter how many times, they could never find an answer.…

The park was always dark with little or no illumination, except for the light given from the moon and the stars. Finally, I had arrived at the Bates Manor. “God,” I thought to myself, “this place is really out here!” As soon as I pulled in, I caught a glimpse of a man; I couldn’t quite visualize his face through the evening fog, just his figure. I parked my black car on the newly lain asphalt and grabbed my purse in the passenger seat next to me. Now I could see the man as he walked toward my car, a handsome feature with kind eyes had me astonished; not quite expecting someone like him at a place like this.…

As the bright orange sun was peaking through the horizon, the bright blue sky was bare of clouds and there was a light mist in the cool, crisp, morning air. The air was fresh and clean, and you could smell the dew in the air. The grass was wet and beginning to turn slightly brown. The ground was covered with a blanket of colorful leaves that had fallen from the trees like snow, leaving some of the branches almost bare. Many people walked by the old wooden park bench that sat there in the middle of the park. Some were in a hurry, off to school or work, others were slowly walking through the wide cement walking paths, enjoying and taking in the beautiful autumn morning. It soon turned pretty quiet with the only sounds heard were the footsteps of those walking by and cars in the distance.…
